The New York Times Book Review, Robin Tzannes
This is a wonderful and thought-provoking book, encouraging us to take a moment, close our eyes, and see what we can see.
From Parents' Choice?
Browne, the prize-winning and gifted English illustrator, might well be dubbed the Rene Magritte of children's books. His chimp hero Willy, the protagonist of four previous Browne works, here embarks on a surreal pictorial adventure by falling asleep in an overstuffed armchair. In rapid succession, he dreams that he is Tarzan, a rock musician, a scuba diver, an explorer, and a painter. He shrinks to near invisibility and expands to awesome giant-size. The illustrations are gripping, the text little more than serviceable captions. Adult page-turners may well be diverted by the artist's homages to such painters as Matisse, Rousseau, DeChirico, Dali, and others, but children will simply enjoy Willy's magical transformations. For a fanciful child who likes examining visual details, the journey will be richly rewarding, but the work will not be to every child's - or adult's - taste. Parents' Choice Silver Honor. (Selma G. Lanes, Parents' Choice, 1998)
From Booklist
This fifth picture book in Browne's series about Willy the chimp represents quite a departure from the others. Using a noticeably larger format, Browne has taken his endearing chimp and placed him center stage in a series of framed, often well-known paintings, which are meant to be visual representations of Willy's fantastic dreams. Willy appears as Elvis Presley, as a sumo wrestler, as a ballet dancer, and as a superhero. Sometimes Willy is not presented as a particular character. Instead, he's simply depicted as part of a strange landscape, which calls up the work of such famous, possibly familiar artists as Salvador Daliand Winslow Homer. There is no plot, but children will enjoy the superbly illustrated book for its imaginative and humorous artwork, and teachers can use it to inspire youngsters to create their own book of fantasies, or to introduce the artists and paintings Browne is spoofing.
