Heine reunites his barnyard trio of Charlie Rooster, Johnny Mouse, and Fat Percy the pig from his 1982 picture book Friends and sends them off again on their bicycle in search of adventure. Along the way, they perform daring rescues and encounter villainous pirates and a cannibal cook, eventually returning home to regale the other animals with their stories. Heine's watercolors are both zesty and lyrical, but they are somewhat at odds with the ominous farm world described (the pigs are forced to eat continuously, for instance). What's more, sensitive preschoolers may find nightmare material in the depiction of the cannibal cook. Children who relish the thrills and chills of adventure, however, will be well pleased.
