이책의 저자 Peter Sis는 1997년과 1999년 두차례에 걸쳐 Caldecott상을 수상한 역량있는 작가입니다. Peter Sis의 작품들은 한결같이 전문가적인 연구와 고증을 바탕으로 만들어졌기 때문에 깊이있는 정보를 함께 얻을 수 있습니다.
소년은 용을 매우 좋아합니다. 옷에도 용의 그림이 그려져 있고, 방안에는 용과 관련된 온갖 소품들이 즐비합니다. 부모는 소년을 위해 인도네시아의 코모도섬으로 여행을 가기로 했어요. 코모도섬은 전설속의 용과 닮은 코모도 도마뱀이 서식하고 잇는 지구상의 유일한 곳이죠. 길이가 3미터, 무게가 130kg이나 나가는코모도 도마뱀은 1억 3천만년 전에 지구상에서 번성을 누렸으며 지금은 멸종 위기에 처해 있는 희귀동물입니다. 코모도 섬에 도착한 소년과 가족은 너무 많은 관광객과, 인위적으로 코모도 도마뱀을 보여주는 상술에 크게 실망합니다. 소년은 혼자서 코모도 쇼장을 빠져 나와 숲으로 들어 갔습니다. 거기서 소년은 진짜 자연속에서 살고 있는 코모도를 만나지요...
배경 그림 속에 숨어 있는 수많은 코모도 도마뱀을 찾아내는 것은 이 책을 보는 또 다른 즐거움 중의 하나입니다. 어린이에게 자연의 소중함을 일깨워 줄 수 잇는 책입니다.

On the title page, mysterious eyes peek out of the foliage-filled letters that spell Komodo! The boy's bedroom is bursting with dragon paraphernalia: live lizards lurk in leafy tanks, dragon toys hide in nooks and crannies, colorful dinosaur posters grace the walls--there's even a graphic of a dragon on the computer screen. In a living room decorated with dragon-bedecked wallpaper and rugs, the child's parents announce their plans for a trip to see a "real dragon." After sailing to the island of Komodo, the family is disappointed to find a large throng of tourists. A young aficionado of dragons gets the chance of a lifetime when his parents take him to the Indonesian island of Komodo, home to the Komodo dragon--the world's largest lizard, and the sole extant carnivorous dinosaur. The place proves a tourist trap, complete with a staged Dragon Show, but the unnamed narrator ventures into the jungle and has a fleeting but profoundly satisfying encounter with one of the creatures. Although Sis's story is, in the main, rather slight, dragon enthusiasts will be charmed by its mixture of fact (lots of information about the Komodo dragon is included) and fancy (the boy's improbable meeting). The book's true richness, though, lies in its illustrations--watercolors given texture by fine pen-and-ink hatching--which are almost as lush as the Indonesian landscape itself. They contain an abundance of detail and even sly jokes ("It is always easy to find me in school pictures because of my dragon T-shirt," the narrator proclaims, as he stands well camouflaged in a crowd scene worthy of Waldo). Moments of deliberate visual ambiguity add to the fun: is that jungle foliage we see, or a dragon's emerging form?

Peter Sis was born in Czechoslovakia and now lives in New York City with his wife and two children. His drawings appear regularly in The New York Times Book Review and other publications. He is the author-artist of The Three Golden Keys, Komodo!, Follow the Dream, and A Small, Tall Tale from the Far, Far North. He has illustrated several books by other authors, including Sid Fleischman and George Shannon. |

책 곳곳에 잘 표형 되어있는데
티셔츠의 그림도 공룡이고,풀밭에 누워 보는 그림도 공룡이요
온통 방안도 공룡과 관계된 것들로만 꾸며져있다
그렇게도 보고픈 공룡은 그러나 기대에 미치지않는다
온통 사람들에 가려져 모습조차 보기 힘들었으며
자신의 상상속에 그 거대하고 멋진 모습은 찾아보기 어려웠다
실망속에 홀로 숲을 거닐던 소년은
상상인지 현실인지 구분않되는 순간에
공룡과 맞닥뜨리게 되는데
순간..............세상을 다 안은듯한 뿌듯함
만족감 뭐 그런기분이 아니였을까?
작은 동심에 웃게되고
간단하고 약간은 만화적이지만

 마음에 쏙... 좋습니다. |
아이가 Peter Sis의 책들을 잘 보고 좋아해서 구입하게 되었습니다. 글이 많으면 어떡하나 조금 걱정했는데 많지 않고 글도 어렵지 않습니다. 아이는 내용도 내용이지만 그림 보느라 정신 없습니다. 이 작가의 책은 ..
아이가 Peter Sis의 책들을 잘 보고 좋아해서 구입하게 되었습니다. 글이 많으면 어떡하나 조금 걱정했는데 많지 않고 글도 어렵지 않습니다. 아이는 내용도 내용이지만 그림 보느라 정신 없습니다. 이 작가의 책은 그림 보는 재미만으로도 책 값을 톡톡히 하지 않나 싶네요. 아이의 방이 참 인상적이었습니다. 아이도 너무 방을 보면서 참 재미있어했구요. 너무 마음에 들어요.

공룡 좋아하는 4세 아이를 위해 구입했어요.
공룡을 좋아해서 공룡을 보고 싶어하길래 이 책을 사게 되었지요.
살아있는 공룡에 대한 책이라고 했더니 바로 관심을 보이네요.
