어느날 작은 새는 꼬리에 달려있는 털 색깔이 숲속의 나뭇잎 같이 예쁜 녹색인 사자를 보았어요. 녹색의 사자꼬리가 너무나도 아름답고 신기해서 작은 새는 사자를 따라 다녔죠. 작은 새는 사자에게 어떻게 꼬리 색깔이 그렇게 예쁜 녹색이 될 수 있는지 물어 보았지만 사자는 작은 새가 그저 예쁜 목소리로 지저귀는 줄만 알았죠.
저녁이 되어 사자가 동굴 속으로 들어가자 작은 새는 동굴 앞의 나뭇가지에 둥지를 짓고는 사자가 나오기를 기다렸습니다. 다음날 아침이 되자 이번에는 놀랍게도 사자 꼬리 색깔이 마치 꽃과 같이 빨간 색으로 변해 있었어요. 그리고 그 다음 날에는 하늘과 같이 파란 색으로 바뀌었지요.
예쁜 사자 꼬리에 반해서 하루 종일 사자를 따라 다니는 작은 새는 사자 발에 박힌 가시를 빼주기도 하고 덜 익은 베리를 먹으려는 사자에게 먹지 말라고 얘기도 해주는 등 항상 사자 옆을 떠나지 않았죠. 서로 말은 통하지 않았지만 사자와 작은 새는 친한 친구사이가 되었죠.
그러던 어느날 밤 천둥 번개와 함께 폭풍우가 몰아치고, 천둥소리에 놀란 사자는 밖으로 뛰어나와 비에 흠뻑 젖은 작은 새를 품에 안고 동굴 속으로 데리고 들어 갔어요. 그리고 동굴 속에서 작은 새는 사자 꼬리의 색깔이 왜 매일 다른 색으로 바뀌는지 그 비밀을 알게 됩니다....

When the bird notices the lion's bushy green tail, it piques her curiosity. The appendage, in fact, changes color daily, a phenomenon that exasperates the bird until she becomes privy to the secret: the lion has painted a sweeping mural inside his cave, using his tail as a brush. Though Kleven's vibrant combination of watercolor and mixed-media collage is a tasty visual smorgasbord, her insubstantial story lacks drama. Rather than incite wonder, the bird's questions grow increasingly annoying by mid-story. Children may find a challenge in guessing what color the lion's tail will be, as each consecutive spread provides a hint about the forthcoming transformation. The illustrations' intricate details--nesting birds, leaping frogs, flitting butterflies--add sparkle to scenes already resplendent with bold color and texture. Regrettably, the lustrous art does little to energize a plodding tale.

For children that are ready for a real story, author-illustrator Kleven's The Lion and the Little Red Bird starts simply. A red bird wonders at how a lion's tail changes color. She observes and marvels until the smiling lion rescues the shivering bird from a storm. Once inside his cave, she chirps happily amid his glowing art and the lion delights to the sound of her song. Kleven's art is brilliant collage that changes mood with her plot and exposes deep meaning without belaboring the point.

It's odd, perhaps, to write a book about a peaceable kingdom where words don't get in the way. The two characters in 'The Lion and the Little Red Bird' have no common language, which Elisa Kleven, the author and illustrator, seems to hint is the basis for a good relationship. In fact, the lion never deigns to speak at all. . . . Ms. Kleven seems to recognize that her greatest strength, her truest language, is that of image and not of word. So the hero of the story is, not surprisingly, the nonverbal lion rather than the very talkative bird. . . . The image of a preverbal paradise where lion and bird pass a joyful lifetime of creativity and play is very seductive. But this seemingly innocent appeal can be read as carrying a far different message to children, a message of parental--and in this case patriarchal (the lion is, after all, king)--control: It is better to be seen than heard. |
