Annotation
A donkey has fantastic dreams while crossing the desert, and at the end of the day the lady who has been riding on his back gives birth in a cave to a very special baby, the baby Jesus.
From the Publisher
A beautifully illustrated story of the NativityHe was just an ordinary donkey, but on his back he carried a miracle. He carried the Virgin Mary to Bethlehem on the night she gave birth. Along the way he dreamed he was carrying a city, a ship, a fountain, and a rose. He dreamed he was carrying a lady full of heaven--and he was. Barbara Helen Berger's glowing artwork and lyrical text perfectly convey the beauty and majesty of the story of the Nativity. "Like the Christmas message itself, this is simple enough for young listeners to understand yet full of complexities for older children and adults to ponder." --Booklist, starred review * A 1985 Golden Kite Award winner * An ABA Pick of the Lists * A Booklist Editors' Choice Book * A Picture Puffin * Full-color illustrations * 32 pages * Ages 3-8
Synopsis
This book tells "the story of a donkey who dreams he carries on his back a city, a ship, a fountain, a rose--then eventually 'a lady full of heaven.' He carries this serene . . . lady in blue to a stable and there is shown the tiny child who has been born. 'But he was not dreaming now. He was awake.'" (Horn Book) "Ages five to eight." (N Y Times Book Rev)
Publisher's Weekly
A donkey wakes from a dream of unusual burdens to find that he has carried Mary to the stable where Jesus was born. PW praised the ``glorious, reverent'' paintings, ``in which colors intensify the impact of visions and reality.''
Childrens Literature
The prose of this book, which tells the story of Jesus being born in Bethlehem, is gentle and rhythmic. It implores the reader to slow down and catch every nuance. The dreamy illustrations perfectly match the excellent text. The donkey's dream in the story is full of symbolism, which the author explains in a note at the back of the book. This is a lovely book to read anytime of the year, but would be especially poignant at Christmas time. Readers will be moved when Joseph and Mary invite the donkey inside the stable to see what he and Mary have "carried all this way"--the newborn Christ child. |
