From the Publisher
A flood is coming! When the water climbs to the rooftops, where will everybody go? To Grandma's house, of course, high up on a hill. Before long, the house is full ofpeople, chickens, ducks, pigs, horses, cats, and even a cow. There's only one person missing -- Grandpa!
This heartwarming story by Natalie Kinsey-Warnock is based on a real-life event: the Vermont Flood of 1927. Watercolors by Caldecott Medal-winning artist Emily Arnold McCully capture both the sweeping drama of the flood and the comfort of a cozy kitchen filled with friends, neighbors, and good cheer.

Publishers Weekly
There's nothing like a helping hand from a good neighbor-especially when disaster strikes. Young Wren witnesses this lesson firsthand when she and her grandparents end up smack in the middle of the Vermont flood of November 1927. As she did with her From Dawn Till Dusk, Kinsey-Warnock once again blends history, drama and good old-fashioned storytelling in a picture book that makes these true events relevant to young readers. Life on Grandma and Grandpa's farm isn't particularly easy, but there's always plenty to eat and lots to do. When Grandpa Horace starts building a more modern farmhouse, high atop the nearby hill, Grandma Nora says she doesn't need such a luxury: "That new house is just gravy," she reasons. But the house, finished just before the heavy rains arrived, turns out to be a lifesaver in more ways than one. Neighbors, many with animals in tow, seek higher ground-and find it-at Nora's. As the waters rise, so does the number of shelter-seekers, making the house look indeed like the ark of the book's title. McCully (Mirette on the High Wire) works in watercolors whose palette suggests the era. Her use of chintz patterns and clever details in the snug house as well as bucolic landscapes bring readers right into the action. Nora's hard-as-steel exterior changes dramatically as the tide turns, and her softening makes this a poignant tale of people pulling together when it counts.

Children's Literature
Based on a true story, this book is about a family who survives the Flood of 1927 in Vermont. The story begins as Wren talks about her life on the farm with her grandparents, Horace and Nora. Horace builds a house on the hill for his wife, even though she says she does not need a new one. But when the November rain comes and keeps on raining for two days, Grandma and Wren move to the new, finished house. They receive a few unexpected guests - such as the neighbor's horse and some chickens. Grandpa leaves to help two neighbor boys push their cows to higher ground, while Grandma and Wren try to stay warm. By nightfall, the house is full with people, cats, horses, a cow, a duck, one hundred chickens and plenty of food. Grandma and Wren sneak out and row their boat through the water, and find Grandpa in a tree with a cow he had hung onto as he was washed away by the flood. When Grandpa enters their new house, he decides he has built an ark instead. Watercolor illustrations tell the simple true-life tale of a family who overcomes hardship.

School Library Journal
Set during the Flood of 1927 in Vermont, Kinsey-Warnock's story reveals the tangled emotions and disrupted lives produced by natural disaster. When Wren's Grandpa starts building his wife a new house on a hill, she insists that she has everything she needs in the farmhouse where they raised their eight children. Before the structure is finished, unprecedented rainfall swells the nearby river and drives the family into it. Soon they are joined by 20 people and a variety of livestock. Despite their losses, the neighbors bolster one another's spirits with stories and songs. However, Grandma and Wren cannot put aside their worries about Grandpa, who has not returned from trying to save his heifers. At daybreak, they set out in a rowboat and eventually rescue him from the tree where he is perched downriver. Relief and joy at their reunion overshadow the news of the destruction. McCully's illustrations run the emotional gamut from the panorama of houses swept away in the raging river to a bemused Grandpa gazing at the chickens, cow, and horses in his new house. Mary Calhoun's Flood (Morrow, 1997) and Jane Kurtz's River Friendly, River Wild (S & S, 2000), based on more recent Midwest floods, also provide insights into the human toll of such events. With its distance in time, Nora's Ark offers reassurance that lives can be rebuilt with the support of family and friends.
