이 책은 상어의 생태와 습성에 대하여 사실적이면서도 유머러스한 글과 그림을 이용해서 흥미진진하게 보여줍니다. 상어는 종류와 크기가 다양합니다. 고래상어는 몸길이가 무려 12미터나 되는 반면에 난장이 랜턴상어는 15센티미터 정도 밖에 되지 않습니다. 배스킹 상어는 약 9미터, 범상어는 약 5미터, 백상아리와 기상어는 약 4미터, 청상어와 레몬상어와 고블린상어와 널스상어와 샌드타이거상어는 몸길이가 약 3미터 정도입니다.
모든 상어들이 인간을 공격하는 것은 아니며, 난장이 상어 같이 새우나 다른 물고기를 먹는 종류도 있습니다. 블랙벨리 렌턴 상어는 배에서 빛을 내며, 스웰상어는 복어와 같이 위험에 처하면 배를 부풀려서 몸을 3배 크기로 만들고, 워브공이라는 상어는 주변 환경에 따라 몸색깔을 변화시키기도 하는 등 특이한 재주를 지닌 상어들이 많습니다.
상어들은 크기 만큼이나 형태도 다양합니다. 귀상어는 머리 모양이 망치와 같이 생겼으며, 톱 모양의 주둥이를 지닌 톱상어, 그외에도 천사 상어, 고블린 상어, 쿠키 커터 상어, 널스 상어들도 특이한 모양을 하고 있습니다.
이 책에는 이외에도 상어의 외부와 내부 구조의 특징, 상어의 번식, 상어의 뛰어난 감각기관과 먹이 사냥, 상어의 인간 공격 등을 수록하고 있습니다. 특히 우리가 상어를 무서워 하지만, 상어의 공격으로 사람이 목숨을 잃는 경우는 연간 약 6명 정도밖에 되지 않는다고 하며, 이 숫자는 돼지의 공격으로 죽는 사람 수보다도 적다고 합니다...

Rarely do author and illustrator complement each other as perfectly as in this undersea jewel. Davies, a zoologist who often writes about the sea, uses humor and a touch of child-friendly whimsy to convey a lot of sound scientific knowledge about this ancient type of animal. "Who would expect a shark to . . . have built-in fairy lights . . . or blow up like a party balloon . . . or lie on the sea floor like a scrap of old carpet?" She crafts a true storyline-what makes sharks sharks?-and carries it through to the end. Croft's lavish acrylics add vibrant color, personable fish, and anatomic detail. Layout and type design enhance the illustrations; the package can't be beat. Surprising, indeed. |
