아무도 곰의 집을 방문하지 않았고, 곰 역시 누군가가 자기 집을 방문하는 것을 싫어 했습니다. 심지어 곰은 현관 문에 커다란 글씨로 "방문객 절대 사절"이라는 현판을 달아 놓기까지 했습니다. 그러던 어느날, 아침 식사 준비를 하던 곰은 현관에서 "똑똑독" 노크를 하는 소리를 들었습니다. 문 밖에는 눈망울이 반짝반짝 빛나는 조그만 회색 생쥐 한 마리가 서 있었습니다. 곰은 "방문객 절대 사절"이라는 현판을 가리키며 "Go away."라고 단호하게 말하고는 문을 닫아 버렸습니다.
다시 아침 식사를 준비하기 시작한 곰이 그릇을 꺼내기 위해 찬장을 열었을 때, 아까 그 조그만 회색 생쥐가 찬장 안에서 눈을 반짝이며 쳐다보고 있었습니다. 생쥐는 "차 한 모금만이라도 같이 마시면 안될까요?"라고 간청했지만, 화가 난 곰은 생쥐를 집 밖으로 내쫓았습니다.
곰이 이번에는 빵을 넣어 둔 서랍을 열었을 때, 어느새 그 서랍 속으로 들어간 생쥐가 얼굴을 내밀면서 "치즈 한 조각만 주시면 안될까요?"라고 말하네요. 화가 난 곰은 생쥐를 다시 내쫓은 후, 현관문과 창문을 단단히 잠궈 버렸습니다.
다시 아침 식사를 준비하기 위해 식당으로 돌아 온 곰이 이번에는 냉장고 문을 열었을 때, 이번에도 회색 생쥐가 냉장고 안에서 얼굴을 내미네요. "제발 가버려~" 곰은 비명을 지르면서 다시 생쥐를 내쫓은 후, 창문에 못질을 하고, 벽난로를 막아버렸으며, 심지어는 욕조의 하수구 구멍까지 막아 버렸습니다. 이제 다시는 생쥐가 집으로 들어 올 수 없을 것으로 생각한 곰이 차주전자 뚜껑을 열었을 때... 그 안에서 생쥐가 다시 얼굴을 내미네요... 놀라서 바닥에 주저앉은 곰이 엉엉 울면서 "내가 졌다. 포기할께."라고 말하자, 생쥐는 차 한잔과 치즈 한 조각, 그리고 벽난로의 따뜻한 불을 쬐게 해주면 다시는 집 안에 들어오지 않겠다고 약속합니다.
어쩔 수 없이 곰은 생쥐와 함께 식사를 한 후, 벽난로에 불을 피웠습니다. 생쥐가 벽난로의 불길이 매우 사랑스럽다고 말하자, 곰은 그동안 아무도 자기의 벽난로에 대해서 칭찬을 해주지 않았었다는 것을 깨닫게 됩니다. 벽난로 앞에서 곰이 생쥐에게 우스개 이야기를 해주자, 생쥐는 배꼽을 잡고 웃었습니다. 곰은 생쥐가 자기의 이야기를 듣고 웃어주는 것이 너무 기뻐서 새로운 우스개 이야기를 해주고 싶었지요.
하지만 생쥐는 이제 약속을 지키겠다고 하면서 곰에게 작별 인사를 하고는 집을 떠났습니다. 생쥐가 떠나는 모습을 본 곰은 갑자기 허전함을 느끼고는...

Cheery persistence wears down a curmudgeonly bear in a wry comedy of manners that ends in a most unlikely friendship.
Bear is quite sure he doesn’t like visitors. He even has a sign. So when a mouse taps on his door one day, Bear tells him to leave. But when Bear goes to the cupboard to get a bowl, there is the mouse - small and gray and bright-eyed. In this slapstick tale that begs to be read aloud, all Bear wants is to eat his breakfast in peace, but the mouse - who keeps popping up in the most unexpected places - just won’t go away!

"No visitors allowed" says the sign on Bear's door, so when a small mouse knocks, Bear sends him away, but when he opens the cupboard for a bowl, there is the mouse. "Out!" says Bear, emphasized in large print. As Bear continues to make his breakfast, however, the mouse turns up in the bread drawer, and, after putting the mouse out again, Bear finds him in the fridge. Each time, Bear gets more upset and shuts up more parts of the house, while each time the mouse, "small and gray and bright-eyed," keeps reappearing. When Bear finds the mouse in the teakettle despite all efforts, he gives up. The mouse suggests just a bit of cheese and a cup of tea. The happy ending is then inevitable. A very civilized scene is set in watercolors, ink, and gouache, with appropriate details of cast iron stove, tiled fireplace, and patterned table coverings; it is the perfect place to find the sensitive, tubby brown bear wearing a much too small white apron. Bear's clearly defined expressions, gestures, and body language provoke us; we cannot help but smile. Mouse is a bit small to have the same comic power, but as we can see on the jacket, he can handle himself quite well. The very appealing characters make for a delightfully engaging story.

The sign on Bear's front door declares "NO VISITORS ALLOWED" - and the curmudgeon means it. When a tapping at the door interrupts his breakfast preparation, he's quite annoyed, especially when he opens it and finds a small, bright-eyed mouse. Bear points to his sign and slams the door. But, when he opens the cupboard for a bowl, there is the mouse. "OUT," commands Bear. Three more times, the mouse raps and Bear yells. He locks the door and windows, stops up the chimney, plugs the drain in the bathtub and thinks he's mouse-free - until he lifts the tea-kettle lid and there's the mouse - again! "I give up," Bear blubbers. "You win!" Two plates of cheese, two cups of tea and two sets of fire-warmed toes later, the mouse promises to go. When Bear walks him to the door, he shows his appreciation of mouse's company by taking down his sign: "Only for salesmen - not friends." Charmingly droll, watercolor, ink and gouache illustrations, excellent pacing and the contrast in the sizes of Bear and mouse are a perfect comedic mixture. Kids will giggle each time the mouse reappears and grin with satisfaction when big and little become friends.
