미국 남부의 한 가난한 가정에서 태어난 흑인 소년과 가족을 소재로한 내용입니다.
'사운더'가 무슨 의미가 있을까 궁금했는데 아버지가 주워 와 기른 개의 이름이네요.
1972년과 2003년 두번씩이나 영화로도 만들어진 이 소설은 짧지만 강력한 임팩트가 있네요.
두께는 얇지만 1930년대의 흑인소년의 눈에 비친 사회상을 담백하게 느낄 수 있었습니다.
하지만 중고등학생들 정도는 되어야 진지하게 생각해볼 수 있는 내용이라는 생각이 듭니다.

글의 수준은 어렵지 않은데 본문 글자가 꽤 작아 본문이 빽빽한 느낌입니다.
초등학생에겐 집중력 장애를 일으킬 수도 있겠다 싶어요.
최근에 이와 비슷한 단편소설을 읽은 적 있는데 우연이겠지만 개 이름이 ..

최근에 이와 비슷한 단편소설을 읽은 적 있는데 우연이겠지만 개 이름이 똑같네요.
영화로도 만들어진 책이라 표지를 다시 찍었는 지 제가 받은 책에 나와 있는 표지가 더 맘에 드네요.
영화보다는 책으로 읽는 게 훨씬 재밌을 것 같네요.

Argus(all-eyes, the faitful dog of Odyseus) 이야기 끝에 나온 이야기로써, 작가가 전해들은 a black man's story 라고 하는군요.
"Sounder" 라는 이름이 붙은 사연 재밌었는데, 마지막 반전 장치로 사용되네요.
그 당시 the Deep South (미국 최남부. 목화 플랜테이션 지역, South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Lousiana) 에 건전한 사회의 눈이 있었었다면, 미국은 좀 달랐을텐데요.
시종 "Lonesome Valley" 성경구절이 나오는데, 다시 찾아 읽어보게 되네요.
