정말 대단한 사람이죠?
글밥이 많아서 어린 아이들은 엄마가 읽어주셔야 합니다.하지만 미리 사두실만한 가치가 충분한 책입니다.

책을 받기 전에는 이 시리즈의 전기문들이 좀 미심쩍었는데 받고 보니 괜한 걱정이었음을 알았습니다.
편집이 다소 어지럽긴 하지만 리딩북으로 나쁘지 않네요.
특히 벤자민 프랭클린 같은 사람은 영어를 공부..

벤자민 프랭클린(1706-1790)은 미국 건국의 아버지(founding fathers) 중 한 명이죠.
헌법 기초(the Constitutional Convention, 1787)했을뿐만 아니라, 정말로 미국 독립사에서 큰 역할(the Continental Congress1775, the Declaration of Indpendence1776, the Treaty of Alliance with France1778, the Treaty of Paris1783)을 한 사람이며, 식민사회에서도 여러가지 유익한 사회조직(Free Library, fire departments, insurance companies, post offices)을 만들었구요.
안타깝게 나이가 많아서 와싱턴이 초대 대통령으로 정부를 구성(1789)한 이듬해에 죽어서 그렇지, 좀만 젊었더라면, 대통령 직도 지냈을 사람이지요.
보통사람(ordinary people, middling)으로 태어난 그지만, 발명가(Lists, lightning rods, political cartoons(join or die), franklin stove, bifocals, daylight saving time), 사업가, 사회운동가, 외교관으로써의 수완도 상당한 팔방미인(a jack-of-all-trades)이지요.
당시의 출판사(money, documents, booklets)와 신문사(the Pennsylvania Gazette)가 얼마나 대단한 사업이였는지 알 수 있었네요.
당시 인지세(the Stamp Act. 1765)가 얼마나 광범위한 세원(books, newspapers, pamphlets, playing cards)을 아우르고 있었는지 알 수 있었네요.
당시 독립 선언서를 만든다는 것은, 목숨을 건 일이었단 것을 알았네요.
그가 만든 격언들(Ben's sayings)을 보면, 이미 우리 눈에 익숙한 것들이 많더군요.
