Langley has combined in-depth research with the arresting, trademark photographs of the series to showcase a complex period in European history. The book covers many aspects of the Renaissance, including the rise of city-states, trade, art, architecture, and the role of the Catholic Church. There are also sections on dress and daily life-the basis for many reports in today's classrooms. The tersely written, well-documented text takes a broad-brush approach to the period, providing an introduction to each topic. Detailed captions supply additional information. However, it's the choice and placement of full-color photographs and reproductions that make this book so appealing. The layout features a mixture of large photographs and smaller insets, drawing the eye in with its variety and movement. Unfortunately, the index is far from inclusive. For younger readers, the book will provide adequate enough visual and textural information for class projects. For others, it offers a number of wonderful jumping-off points for more in-depth research. |

보통, 르네상스(Renaissance)라고 하면, 신(神) 중심의 세계를 인간중심(humanism)의 세상으로 바꾼 것으로, 고대 그리스와 로마의 문예를 되살려서(rebirth) 인간 해방과 합리적인 사유 길을 열어 준 것으로, 미켈란젤로와 레오나르도 다빈치와 같은 위대한 천재 화가가 살았던 시기로만 알고 있다.
그러나 이 책을 보면 르네상스가 그런 거창한 정신적·문화적 변화만을 낳은 것이 아니라삶의 양식을 바꾼 사소한 일들도 일어났음을 알게 된다. 즉, 현재 우리의 일상 생활을 바꾼 많은 것들이 르네상스 시기에 만들지고 전파되고 사용되었음을 알 수 있다. 예컨대, 부르주아식 정원 가꾸기, 3지창과 4지창 포크의 사용, 여성용 악서세리인 카메오의 보급, 입식 생활의 주범(?)인 의자의 사용과 같은 것이 그것이다. 르네상스 시기에 나온 이런 일상적인 것들에 대한 설명을 화보와 함께 보는 재미, 너무 쏠쏠하다.
