자연계의 모든 식물이나 동물에게는 순환 사이클이 있습니다. 식물들은 흙속에서 씨앗이 자라 싹이 되고 열매를 맺거나 꽃을 피웁니다. 열매를 맺는 식물들은 안에 씨앗을 품고 있습니다. 비록 식물 자신은 없어지지만 그 씨앗이 남아 다시 새로운 생명으로 태어납니다. 이 책에서는 호박이 씨앗에서 자라 다시 땅으로 돌아갈 때까지의 순환을 생생한 사진을 통해 우리에게 보여줍니다.
첫 페이지를 펴면 무수히 많이 싸여있는 호박들이 나옵니다. 아이들이 그 호박에서 씨앗을 가져다 땅에 심습니다. 씨앗은 정원의 뒤뜰에서 풍성하게 자라 하늘을 향해 넓고 푸른 잎을 보이며 자랍니다. 호박 줄기가 꼬이면서 자라나 마침내 꽃을 피웁니다. 노란꽃이 되면 벌이 날아옵니다(벌이 호박꽃의 수술에 들어간 모습이 줌인됩니다). 호박에 귀뚜라미와 거미가 앉아있는 모습이 보입니다. 호박을 키우는 정원사 아저씨가 호박에 이름을 새깁니다. 이제 호박은 완전히 자라 노랗게 영글었습니다. 이제 호박에 눈, 코, 잎을 뚫어 얼굴모양을 만들어 안에 초를 피웠습니다. 그리고는 현관의 계단에 걸어놓았어요. 그리고... 예뻤던 호박 얼굴은 날이 갈수록 일그러지네요. 호박은 다시 땅으로 돌아갔습니다. 하지만.. 다시 새로운 새싹이 자라납니다.
호박이 자라는 과정을 사진을 통해 실감나게 보여줍니다. 단순히 호박의 일생을 과학적으로 설명하는 것이 아닌 리듬있는 아름다운 글을 통해 표현합니다. 호박들이 자라는 전체 화면에서 잎사귀 하나에 붙은 거미를 보여주는 등 넓은 시야에서부터 줌인 화면까지 다양한 각도에서 사진 촬영을 했습니다.

표지가 두꺼운 판지나 보드지가 아닌 비교적 얇은 종이를 사용해서 만든 책이며, 실박음질 대신에 풀로 제본처리하는 경우가 많습니다. 일반적으로 하드커버나 보드북에 비해서 가격이 저렴합니다. 소프트커버로 불리우기도 합니다. 책의 이음새 부분이 접히거나 휘는 내구성이 그리 좋지는 않은 책입니다.
