북극지방의 여름은 낮이 길고 밤이 짧습니다. 하지인 6월 21일에는 새벽 1시 58분에 해가 떠서 밤 11시 47분에 질 때까지 무려 21시간 49분 동안 햇살이 계속 비칩니다. 여름철의 온도는 섭씨 20도 정도까지 올라가서 다양한 동물과 식물들이 쾌적하게 지낼 수 있습니다. 하지만 추분인 9월 21일을 지나면 낮은 밤보다 점점 짧아지며 동지인 12월 21일이 되면 해가 비치는 시간은 3시간 43분에 불과하고 하루 종일 어둠에 쌓이게 됩니다. 북극권의 겨울날씨는 영하 40도까지 내려갈 만큼 매우 혹독하기 때문에 대부분의 철새들은 이미 남쪽으로 날아가버리고 곰과 다람쥐는 동굴 속에서 깊은 겨울잠에 빠집니다. 하지만 어둠이 계속되는 겨울동안 오로라의 빛이 겨울 밤하늘을 화려하게 장식하기 때문에 외로운 북극 겨울의 위안이 됩니다. 동지가 지나면 해는 점점 길어지고, 춘분이 되면 밤과 낮의 길이가 같아집니다. 온도가 점점 올라가는 봄이 되면 남쪽으로 날아갔던 철새들이 다시 돌아오고 곰도 겨울잠에서 깨어나며, 푸르름으로 뒤덮인 세상은 생명의 기운이 넘쳐납니다...

This book is based on a purely delightful concept-recording the changes in Arctic light from one summer solstice to the next. In Fairbanks, AK, Miller begins with the 21 hours and 49 minutes of daylight on June 21, then follows the light's diminution month by month to the winter solstice and its daylight of 3 hours and 43 minutes to its gradual swelling back to the summer solstice. Her brief text includes not only lyrical messages about light and its partner, darkness, but also references to the reaction of wildlife to the waxing and waning: the migration of birds and caribou, the hibernation of bears, the changing coat of the Arctic hare. Wrapped about this unfamiliar (to many of us) swirl of seasons of light are Van Zyle's superb and quietly beautiful acrylic paintings, which capture both light and dark in perfect harmony with the text. A map of Alaska, an introductory note, and an excellent glossary are included. Team this bit of loveliness and imagination with Ellen Jackson's delightful quartet Summer Solstice (2001), Autumn Equinox (2000), Winter Solstice (1994), and Spring Solstice (2002, all Millbrook); encourage children to get out a calendar, pen, paper, thermometer, and clock and jubilantly record the radiant pattern of light in their own little corners of the world. Miller, a resident of Fairbanks, Alaska, explains the peculiarities of light and seasons near the Arctic Circle and briefly introduces some of the animals that live in the area. Text at the top of each page carries a date ("June 21," "July 21," and so on through a year); the hours of daylight; the time of sunrise and sunset; and the average temperatures. Below, a double-page painting shows a scene in the natural world, typically accompanied by one short paragraph commenting on what is happening and another discussing the length of day and night as well as natural phenomena, such as "sun dogs." The realistic paintings often focus on animals within a landscape. The book concludes with an unusually good glossary that describes phenomena and terms such as alpenglow, flat light, and vernal equinox. Useful for the classroom. |

웬간한 전문지식이 없는 어른도 이해하기 힘든 책이긴 해요.

하지만 그 그림하나로 그냥......아...아름답다..라고 이해하기 시작하면서 보려한다면
아주 어린월령도 상관은 없을듯합니다.
몃월 몃일 낮 몃시 몃분, 일출시간 일몰시간 최저온도 최고온도, 각 페이지마다 상단에 적혀있고
그림에 그 상황에 해당되는그림과 설명이 적혀잇습니다.
한권의 기록지라 해도 무방하겠지만 기록지라 하기엔 너무 아릅답고,
짧아서 아쉬운 책이라고 보여지네요.

'와...나 읽으라고 산거야?' 아이들 책 읽어주다가 갑자기 소리를 지릅니다. 책 표지 디자인이 아주 근사하죠. 아들도 금세 호기심을 보입니다. 산토끼와 늑대 등 큰 그림은 흡인력이 있어서 글자 포이트도 작고 글밥도 꽤 있지만 읽어주는 글을 잘 듣습니다. 아이들 아빠는 녀석들 재우고 밤에 혼자 나와서 호젓하게 읽어야겠다고 합니다. 권장연령이 6세-12세인데 말이죠.
