맥스는 늑대 옷을 입고 벽에 못을 박고, 포크를 들고 강아지를 겁주며 뛰어 놀다가 엄마에게 야단맞습니다. 벌로서 저녁밥도 굶고 자기 방에 혼자 있게 된 맥스는 상상의 날개를 펼칩니다. 방안에 숲이 자라고 벽은 바깥 세상으로 변하고 바다가 펼쳐집니다. 맥스는 보트를 타고 바다를 건너갑니다. 오랜 항해끝에 괴물들의 나라에 도착하게 된 맥스는 달려드는 괴물들을 눈싸움으로 제압하고는 그들의 왕이 됩니다. 괴물나라의 왕이 되어 시간 가는 줄 모르고 뛰어 놀던 맥스. 하지만 집과 엄마와 맛있는 음식이 그리워 집니다. 맥스는 즐거운 괴물나라를 뒤로 상상의 세계를 접고 자기 방으로 돌아옵니다. 방 한쪽 옆 테이블에는 엄마가 차려주신 맛있는 저녁밥이 맥스를 기다리고 있습니다.

Book Description
Where the Wild Things Are is one of those truly rare books that can be enjoyed equally by a child and a grown-up. If you disagree, then it's been too long since you've attended a wild rumpus. Max dons his wolf suit in pursuit of some mischief and gets sent to bed without supper. Fortuitously, a forest grows in his room, allowing his wild rampage to continue unimpaired. Sendak's color illustrations (perhaps his finest) are beautiful, and each turn of the page brings the discovery of a new wonder.
The wild things--with their mismatched parts and giant eyes--manage somehow to be scary-looking without ever really being scary; at times they're downright hilarious. Sendak's defiantly run-on sentences--one of his trademarks--lend the perfect touch of stream of consciousness to the tale, which floats between the land of dreams and a child's imagination.
This Sendak classic is more fun than you've ever had in a wolf suit, and it manages to reaffirm the notion that there's no place like home.

모리스 샌닥 (Maurice Sendak)

1928년 6월 10일 뉴욕시 출생

가장 유명한 어린이 그림책 화가입니다. 폴란드계 이민가정에서 태어나 뉴욕시의 Art Student's League에서 교육을 받았습니다. 교육기간중 그는 유명한 만화의 배경그림을 그리기도 하고 장난감 가게의 진열장 장식을 맡아 하기도 했습니다. 그가 처음으로 그린 어린이 그림책은 Marcel Ayme이 글을 쓴 "The Wonderful Farm(1951)과 Ruth Krauss가 글을 쓴 "A Hole is to dig(1952)"였으며 두편 모두 성공을 거뒀습니다. 그 후 약 80편의 어린이 그림책을 그린 Maurice Sendak은 미국뿐 아니라 세계적으로 어린이 그림책의 대표적인 Illustrator로 인정받게 되었으며, Caldectt상 8차례 수상을 비롯한 다양한 수상 경력을 지니고 있습니다.
