애플파이는 시장에 가서 재료들을 사서 잘 섞은 후 굽기만 하면 되는, 만들기가 매우 쉬운 음식입니다. 그런데 시장이 문을 닫아서 재료를 구할 수 없게 되자 주인공 소녀는 애플파이 재료를 구하기 위해 세계 여행을 떠나게 된다는 엉뚱하고도 기발한 내용입니다.

우선 재료 리스트와 워킹신발을 챙겨서 여행가방을 싼 후, 증기여객선을 타고 이태리로 갑니다. 그 곳에서는 마카로니용으로 많이 쓰이는 세몰리나 밀을 구입합니다.

이태리에서 기차를 타고 프랑스로 가서 가장 질 좋은 알을 낳는 프랑스 암탉을 한 마리 구합니다.

그 다음에는 범선을 타고 세계에서 가장 훌륭한 시네몬을 생산하는 스리랑카로 가서 시네몬을 만드는 재료인 쿠룬두 나무의 껍질을 벗깁니다.

그 다음에는 영국으로 가서 양질의 우유를 만드는 젖소 한 마리를 구합니다. 영국은 젖소도 예절이 바르다네요.

바나나 보트를 타고 자마이카로 향합니다. 그 곳에서는 소금의 원료인 바닷물을 한 컵 담고, 밭으로 가서 설탕의 원료인 사탕수수 몇 단을 잘라냅니다.

이제는 비행기를 타고 고향 미국으로 돌아갑니다. 그런데 애플파이에 빠져서는 안되는 뭔가 중요한 재료를 빠트린 것은 아닐까요? 아~! 사과를 빼먹었네요... 비행기 조종사는 소녀와 젖소와 닭을 낙하산을 이용해서 사과산지로 유명한 미국의 버몬트 지역에 떨어뜨립니다. 그 곳에서 사과 8개를 구해서 1개는 소에게, 1개는 닭에게, 1개는 자기가 먹은 후, 남은 5개를 갖고 집으로 향합니다.

자 이제 구해 온 재료들로 애플파이를 만들 시간입니다. 밀은 빻아서 밀가루로 만들고, 쿠룬두껍질은 갈아서 시네몬을 만들고, 바닷물은 증발시켜 소금을 만들고, 사탕수수는 끓여서 설탕을 만들고, 닭에게 부탁해서 달걀 한 개를 얻고, 젖소에게서 짜낸 우유를 저어서 버터를 만들고, 사과를 작게 썰은 후 다른 재료들과 잘 섞고 오븐에 구우면 친구들과 나워먹을 맛있는 애플파이가 완성됩니다.

특히 애플파이 위에 바닐라 아이스크림을 얹어 먹으면 그 맛이 환상입니다. 소녀는 바닐라 아이스크림을 사기 위해 시장에 갔는데... 이런이런~~ 낚시 여행간 주인장이 아직 돌아 오지 않았네요...

유머가 넘치는 내용을 통해 우리가 무심코 먹거나 소비하는 것들이 어떤 수많은 과정을 거쳐 만들어지는지를 깨닫게 해줍니다.

In this whimsical, geographical shopping journey, a young baker thinks of how to proceed if the market is closed. She directs readers, via various modes of transportation, to gather seminola wheat in Italy, a chicken (for its egg) in France, bark from the kurundu (cinnamon) tree in Sri Lanka, a cow (for butter) in England, salt water and sugar cane in Jamaica, and apples in Vermont. Processing the worldly ingredients is quickly handled, a pie is baked, and friends are invited to share. A look around the table reveals children from all of the countries in which the foods have been found. A recipe for apple pie appears on the last page. The brightly colored pictures are fanciful, revealing cheerful, busy people working in towns, fields, and forests of the various countries. The purposeful girl in a green pinafore collects her ingredients with enthusiasm and good cheer. A lighthearted, pleasurable selection.

What if the market was closed when you wanted to bake a pie? You could embark for Europe, learn Italian en route, and pick up some semolina wheat in Italy, an egg in France, kurundu bark for cinnamon in Sri Lanka, and an entire cow in England (butter) before coming home via Jamaica (sugar) and Vermont (apples). The expertly designed illustrations in which a dark-haired lass journeys by various means to these interesting places to get her groceries are lovely and lively, and the narrative, too, travels at a spritely pace. The journey is neither quite logical enough to be truly informative nor quite bizarre enough to be satisfyingly silly, while the rich, sweet recipe that's appended will take some adult assistance. Still, fun.
