창 밖을 바라보니 온 세상이 하얀 눈으로 덮여 있는데, 오직 발자국 하나가 길게 어디론가 가고 있네요. 도대체 누가 이 발자국을 만든 걸까요? 그리고 어디로 가는 발자국일까요? 소녀는 궁금증을 직접 풀어 보기로 하고, 두툼한 코트와 목도리, 벙어리 장갑, 털신으로 중무장을 하고는 발자국을 따라 갑니다.
마당을 지나 대문을 열고 밖으로 나갑니다. 토끼 발자국이라고 하기에는 너무 크고, 곰은 겨울잠을 자기 때문에 이 발자국의 주인이 될 수 없지요.
바위 틈을 지나 공꽁 얼은 연못을 따라 가다가 눈 덮인 다리를 건너 숲으로 들어 갑니다. 오리 발자국일수도 있지만 오리들은 이미 남쪽 나라로 날아 갔으며, 마멋은 겨울잠을 자기 때문에 이 발자국을 남길 수가 없지요.
쓰러진 통나무 밑을 살펴본 후, 언덕을 가로 질러 계속 발자국을 따라갑니다. 도대체 이 발자국은 누가 남긴 것일까요? 여우? 개? 다람쥐? 고양이? 그러다 우연히 나뭇가지에 걸린 벙어리 장갑 한짝을 발견합니다. (장갑의 무늬가 소녀가 목에 두른 목도리와 똑같네요. 그리고 이 장갑의 주인이 누구인지는 이 책의 앞 부분 6페이지에서 힌트를 주고 있습니다.)

"Just outside my window, / There are tracks in the snow. / Who made the tracks? / Where do they go?" Keen to find out, a little girl follows the tracks throughout her rural neighborhood. Yee cleverly lets the white of the paper stand in for snow, rendering the other elements in soft colored pencils and an almost pointillistic style: ice-blue footprints; woodland flora and fauna in muted browns and grays; and the little girl herself, whose bright-red hooded coat (reminiscent of Peter's in The Snowy Day) adds cheer to the otherwise muted scenes. The singsong text, however, isn't quite as effective; certain lines ("Is that a hippopotamus?") serve the demands of the rhyme scheme more than they advance the story. Even so, this unassuming book will be enjoyed for its petite trim size, its wintry charm, and the gently humorous solution to its small mystery: the girl finally realizes that the tracks were made yesterday by someone she knows very well--herself. |
