엄마와 아빠 호랑이는 정글이 위험하므로 절대로 들어가지 말라고 얘기 했습니다만, 어느 무더운 오후에 더위를 참지 못한 아기호랑이 스트라이프는 엄마와 아빠 호랑이가 잠든 사이에 시원한 곳을 찾아 정글 안으로 몰래 들어 갔습니다.
하지만 정글 안에서 스트라이프는 벌들에 쫒겨서 강으로 뛰어 들었다가 악어떼를 만나고, 악어들을 피해서 통나무를 타고 강을 따라 내려갔다가 넓은 바다로 나가게 됩니다. 바다에서 스트라이프는 커다란 고래에게 먹혀서 고래 입 속으로 들어 갔습니다만, 꼬리로 고래의 입천장을 간지럽혀서 재채기를 하도록 만듭니다. 고래가 크게 재채기를 하는 바람에 스트라이프는 하늘로 높이 날아 올라서 멀리멀리 날아가다가 무사히 엄마 아빠 호랑이가 있는 곳으로 떨어지게 됩니다...
부모님의 말을 듣지 않으면, 톡톡히 댓가를 치른다는 교훈을 깨닫게 해주는 내용입니다.

표지가 두꺼운 판지나 보드지가 아닌 비교적 얇은 종이를 사용해서 만든 책이며, 실박음질 대신에 풀로 제본처리하는 경우가 많습니다. 일반적으로 하드커버나 보드북에 비해서 가격이 저렴합니다. 소프트커버로 불리우기도 합니다. 책의 이음새 부분이 접히거나 휘는 내구성이 그리 좋지는 않은 책입니다.

This is a charming and very simple story for the very young about a tiger and a cub who strays too far from his parents and gets chased by crocodiles and swallowed by a whale. Luckily, all ends happily. It sends a warm and friendly message about listening to your parents. The story is vividly illustrated with rich art and collage. This is Joanne Partis's first book and is adapted from her art school project. She lives in Loughborough.

Stripe's parents warn him not to go into the jungle alone, but when they fall asleep, the little tiger sneaks off for an unforgettable adventure. First he is chased by a swarm of angry bees. Then he is almost eaten by hungry crocodiles that run him out to sea. Just when he thinks he is safe inside a cave, he realizes he is inside the mouth of a whale. Scared and cold, he thinks of a way to escape: he tickles the roof of the creature's mouth with his tail and the resulting sneeze propels him into the air and back home where his parent's are just awakening. Stripe's curiosity about the jungle is more than satisfied and he is happy not to return for a long time. Partis's artwork is colorful and textured with interesting brush strokes and batiklike patterns. A good choice for novice armchair adventurers.

This first American edition of a British title rehashes the classic story of an accidental adventure that results when a young one disobeys his parents warnings. His first steps beyond the safety of parents lead the young tiger, Stripe, into the dangerous (and forbidden) jungle. In a run from angry bees he dives into the water, only to be chased by a riverful of hungry crocodiles. Atop his makeshift log of a raft, he heads for safety in the mouth of a cave, which proves to be the jaws of a whale. Predictably, Stripe tickles the top of the whales mouth and a huge whale of a sneeze sends him flying, then falling, falling, falling until he lands safe at home in the laps of his mom and dad. The so-called adventure does not carry suspense or mounting tension, nor does it chart new territory; still, young readers will cheer Stripe to safety, thanks to the pleasing vitality of the illustrations, which imbue Stripe with all of his personality. Stripe is a frisky fellow, cavorting through lollipop trees in a candy-colored jungle or swirling with patterned fishes in curlicues of ocean blue. Hell be fun to have around. |
