Clementine(몰입 천재 클레멘타인), The Talented Clementine(예능 천재 클레멘타인)을 잇는 클레멘타인 연작동화 세 번째 이야기이며, 국내에서는 "클레멘타인의 편지"라는 제목으로 번역서가 출간된 책입니다.
자기만의 독특한 시각으로 세상을 바라보는 주인공 클레멘타인은 엉뚱하고 기발한 말과 행동으로 주위 사람들을 종종 당황시키곤 합니다. 의자에 잠시도 가만히 앉아 있지 않고, 다른 평범한 아이들처럼 생각하고 행동하지 않는 클레멘타인을 어른들은 ‘골칫거리’로 여기지요. 하지만 클레멘타인은 지금까지 주변에서 흔히 볼 수 없던 캐릭터로, 굉장히 기발하고, 원기 왕성하며 자유로운 영혼을 가졌답니다. 우리 주위에서도 클레멘타인처럼 조금 산만하지만 어떤 면에서는 아주 뛰어난 재능을 가진 친구들을 볼 수 있습니다. 다소 엉뚱한 면을 가진 사람일지라도 그런 면조차 긍정적으로 해석하고 격려한다면, 클레멘타인처럼 자신이 지닌 재능을 100% 발휘하는 아이, 나와 조금 다를 뿐인 ‘특별한 친구’가 될 것입니다.
3학년인 클레멘타인은 담임 선생님과 호흡이 척척 잘 맞는다고 생각합니다. 그런데 어느 날, 선생님이 교사 연수 프로그램에 참여하게 되어 더 이상 담임을 맡지 못하게 됩니다. 담임 선생님을 대신할 임시 선생님이 오지만, 클레멘타인은 임시 선생님과 자꾸 충돌하기만 합니다. 담임 선생님을 반드시 되돌아오게 해야겠다고 생각한 클레멘타인은 ‘교사 연수 심사위원회’에 보낼 추천 편지에 모두가 깜짝 놀란 만한 내용을 쓰기로 마음먹습니다. 클레멘타인의 편지를 들은 담임 선생님은 과연 다시 돌아올 수 있을까요?

Irrepressible and delightful Clementine is back. She is enjoying third grade - she is in sync with her teacher, Mr. D'Matz, and is rarely sent to speak with Principal Rice, a major accomplishment in her school life. Then Mr. D'Matz is selected as one of three finalists for an Adventures for Teachers archaeological dig in Egypt and leaves for a week to meet with the committee. Clementine is distraught to learn that if chosen as the winner, he will be gone for the rest of the school year. When the substitute arrives, Clementine learns that she has to follow completely different rules. The next week is not an easy one for the child as she adjusts to Mrs. Nagel, worries about losing Mr. D'Matz, copes with her everyday life as an impulsive eight-year-old, and frets about the letter she is supposed to write to the prize committee about her teacher. Through it all, she shines with a vibrant spirit that can never be completely extinguished, even when she is feeling down. Frazee's pen-and-ink drawings perfectly capture Clementine's personality and her world. |
