I like me의 저자인 Nancy Carlson의 재미있는 그림책입니다.
헨리가 초등학교에서 첫 수업을 마치고 스쿨버스를 타고 도착하자, 엄마와 동생이 마중을 나왔습니다. 헨리는 초등학교에서의 첫 수업에 대한 소감을 엄마에게 자세히 들려 줍니다.
유치원에서의 생활을 그리워 하는 헨리는 초등학교가 그리 탐탁치 않은가 봅니다. 담임 선생님도 남자고, 수업 내용도 다르며, 아는 친구도 별로 없고, 휴식시간에 재미있는 놀이기구는 고학년생들이 모두 차지하고 있다네요.
하지만 말을 그렇게 하면서도 헨리는 초등학교에서 수업과 생활이 신나고 재미있었나 봅니다. 과학 코너에는 여러 식물들과 벌레와 기니아 피그도 있었고, 자신의 이름이 새겨진 책상도 생겼으며, 새로운 친구도 사귀었고, 수학과 과학 같은 새로운 과목들도 배웠습니다. 아직 책을 읽지는 못하지만 도서관 사용법도 배웠고, 화장실 문에 쓰여진 "Boys"라는 단어도 배웠습니다. 점심시간에는 식당 음식이 맛이 없으면 어쩌나 걱정했는데, 참치 샌드위치가 맛있었으며, 수업 중간에는 간식시간도 있었습니다. 음악시간에는 새로운 노래를 배우고, 미술시간에는 찰흙 만들기를 하는 것도 재미있었습니다...
처음에는 유치원 생활을 드리워 하더니, 엄마에게 초등학교에서의 첫날 경험을 얘기한 후, 헨리는 비로서 자신이 의젓한 초등학생이 되었다는 것을 깨닫게 됩니다.

In Carlson's third book about Henry and his adventures, the mouse has just spent his first day in first grade and is not quite sure how he feels about it. However, as he describes his experiences to his mother, he realizes that for every negative (he doesn't sit near any of his old friends) there is a positive (he's made a new pal who likes soccer and spiders as much as he does). By the time he's finished with his recitation, he's excited, happy, and proud that he's a real first grader now! Children taking this monumental step will sympathize with Henry's uncertainty and be reassured by his adjustment. The vibrantly colored illustrations and the cast of animal characters have lots of child appeal. Librarians will particularly appreciate the page where Henry and his classmates are eagerly investigating the Everybody Books in the school library. Whether used for storytime or independent reading, the book is sure to find an audience.
