무민은 색깔은 희고 포동포동하며 주둥이가 커서 전반적으로 하마를 닮은 트롤(괴물)입니다. 이들은 핀란드의 숲 속에 있다는 무민의 골짜기에서 사는데, 동화 속에서 친구들과 함께 많은 모험을 합니다.
이 책에서는 무민의 섬에서 등대지기가 된 무민 아빠가 바다에서 겪게 되는 재미있는 이야기가 펼쳐집니다.
어느 날 새로운 생활을 찾아 아빠 무민은 가족들을 이끌고 바다로 나갑니다. 아빠 무민의 섬으로 간 것입니다. 잿빛 등대가 있는 조그만 바위 섬. 그곳에 가면 아빠 무민은 새로운 힘이 생기고 세상일을 가족들에게 설명해줄 수 있을 것 같았습니다. 그런데 그 섬은 매우 신비롭고도 괴이한 곳이었습니다. 어찌된 일인지 엄마 무민의 장미가 자라지 않는 것입니다. 등대지기가 된 아빠 무민은 등대에 불을 밝힐 수 없고 적어놓아야 할 파도의 비밀 법칙도 결코 알아낼 수가 없었습니다. 가족들의 마음 한구석에 피어오른 궁금증은 점점 커져만 간가네요. “이전의 등대지기는 왜 등대를 떠났을까?”
