In the Small Small Pond로 Caldecott상을 수상한 Denise Fleming의 그림책입니다. 국내에는 "강아지 버스터"라는 제목으로 번역서가 출간되었습니다.
버스터는 부족함이 없는 행복한 강아지입니다. 자신의 이름이 적혀 있는 밥그릇이 있고, 낮잠을 잘 수 있는 커다란 나무와 풀밭도 있습니다. 뒹굴며 놀 수 있는 모래밭도 있고, 집안으로 들어갈 수 있는 전용 구멍문도 있으며, 장난감도 한 바구니나 있고, 좋아하는 방송을 들을 수 있는 라디오도 있습니다. 그리고 갈색 신발을 신는 주인이 공원으로 산책도 시켜주지요.
그런데 어느날 갈색 신발의 주인이 베티라는 이름의 하얀 고양이를 데려오면서 버스터의 행복은 끝나고 고난의 길이 시작되었습니다.
다른 개들과는 달리 버스터는 고양이를 무서워 합니다. 그런데 고양이 베티는 버스터를 너무나도 좋아하네요. 버스터가 어디를 가든 베티는 항상 그의 주위를 맴돌았으며, 버스터에게 행복을 안겨줬던 소유물들인 밥그릇, 모래밭, 나무 밑, 구멍문은 모두 베티가 함께 사용하게 되었습니다. 그리고 베스터가 좋아하는 방송국을 베티가 바꿔버리자 버스터는 더 이상 참지 못하고 고양이가 도저히 찾지 못할 곳으로 가출을 감행합니다.
결국 집을 뛰쳐나간 버스터는 다시금 혼자가 된 것에 만족하지만 얼마 지나지 않아 쓸쓸함을 느끼고 집에 가는 길마저 잃어버립니다. 누군가와 함께였다면 덜 외롭고 덜 걱정되었겠지요. 그때 멀리 떨어진 나무 꼭대기에 대롱대롱 매달려 있는 베티가 보입니다. 베티는 집 나간 버스터를 기다리고 있었던 것입니다. 베티를 이정표 삼아 집으로 무사히 돌아온 버스터는 이제 몸을 부벼대는 베티가 더 이상 싫지 않습니다. 함께 모래 목욕을 하고, 좋아하는 라디오 방송을 들으며 함께 행복해할 수 있는 친구가 생겼으니까요.

Buster, a red-coated pooch, has everything he wants out of life, including personalized food dishes and a comfortable backyard with all the amenities. However, when his owner brings home a fluffy white kitten, the dog's world falls to pieces. No matter how hard Betty tries to make friends, Buster remains terrified of her. Fed up, he slips under the fence, finds his way to an unfamiliar park, and enjoys a peaceful, feline-free afternoon. Finally ready to head home, he realizes that he is lost and experiences a few frightening moments until Betty comes to his rescue. After receiving an affectionate welcome from the kitten, Buster realizes that he has "-everything he could ever want-and more." Fleming's trademark handmade-paper artwork is awash with vibrant colors and dazzling details. Body language and expressive facial features establish the personalities and reflect the emotions of the characters. A mix of double-page pictures and smaller vignettes sets the scene and keeps the action moving quickly. An eagle's-eye map of Buster's route home will have children following each twist and turn. Divided into six titled sections, this picture book has the pace and feel of a beginning chapter book. The format, as well as the use of repetitive language, makes this heartwarming tale a good choice for emergent readers, while the eye-catching illustrations make it perfect for either groups or one-on-one sharing.

Fleming serves up another treat for young children in this endearing story about a dog whose worst nightmare is realized when a cat moves in. Buster has a cushy life until his owner brings home a cat, Betty. Buster is terrified, but Betty wants to be friends and tries to get Buster's attention, in the process irritating him so much that he runs away to spend the day at a cat-free park. Upon waking from a pleasant nap, Buster realizes he doesn't know the way home. It's Betty who guides him safely back from her perch in a tall tree in Buster's own backyard. A double-page spread map with an aerial view of the area marks Buster's route from park to home in orange dashes, which provide a fun way for kids to practice map skills. Dressen-McQueen's artwork, created by pouring colored pulp fiber through hand-cut stencils, is abuzz with vibrant color and exceedingly well composed. Another winner from a popular, talented author and illustrator. |
