A부터 Z까지 각각의 알파벳을 대표하는 사물이나 동물들이 무대 위에 등장합니다. 그리고 제대로 알파벳과 일치하는지는 얼룩말이 심판을 봅니다.

A is for Apple.
B is for Ball.
C is for Cat.

그런데 무스(Moose) 사슴이 D의 순서에 무대 위로 올라왔네요. D is for Moose? 얼룩말 심판은 무스를 D 페이지에서 쫓아냅니다. (D페이지에서는 Duck이 무스에 밀려나서 무대 뒤에 떨어져 있습니다.)

알파벳이 차례로 지나가고 H페이지가 되었을 때 무스가 다시 나타나자 얼룩말 심판은 아직 M의 차례가 안되었으니 더 기다리라고 합니다.

I, J, K가 지나고 L이 되었을 때, 무스는 드디어 다음이 자기 차례라고 좋아합니다만, "M is for Mouse" M의 차례에 무스 대신에 생쥐가 무대 위에 소개되었습니다. 화가 난 무스는 다음 페이지부터 난동과 심술을 부리기 시작하고, 얼룩말 심판은 온 몸을 던져 무스로부터 다른 알파벳들을 보호합니다. 그리고 점점 알파벳의 순서가 T, U, V, W, X, Y... 마지막 종착점으로 향해가자 모든 희망을 잃어버린 무스는 훌쩍훌쩍 울기 시작했습니다.

불쌍한 무스... 하지만 얼룩말은 알파벳의 마지막인 Z의 순서에 무스를 등장시킬 좋은 방법을 생각해 냅니다.

What is 하드커버? 양장본이라고도 불리우며, 표지가 단단한 판지로 만들어진 책입니다. 판지를 천이나 가죽으로 감싸기도 합니다. 책의 속지는 일반적으로 중성처리된 종이(Acid-free paper)를 사용해서 잘 변질이 되지 않기 때문에 오랫동안 보관하기에 적합합니다. 이 종류의 책은 더스트 재킷, 또는 더스트 커버로 불리는 표지덮개가 함께 있는 경우가 많습니다. 간혹 내부 속지가 콩기름 코팅이 된 경우 고약한 냄새가 나는 책도 있습니다.

Zebra is absolutely certain he’ll be able to direct everyone to appear on the correct page, at the appropriate time, without any mishaps, unnecessary drama, or hurt feelings. It’s the ABCs, for goodness’ sake. How difficult can it be?
Oh, dear.
Zebra forgot about moose.


Booklist *Starred Review*
This laugh-out-loud romp of an abecedary features an impatient moose who just can’t wait for his turn. There is something intrinsically funny about moose (the art has a Bullwinkle feel), and this overenthusiastic one prematurely pops up onstage at D, wearing a proud grin, with hapless Duck having been pushed out of the way. Zebra (sporting a referee’s black-striped shirt) leaps out from the corner, shouting, “Moose? No. Moose does not start with D. You are on the wrong page.” Moose then wanders onto Elephant’s page, Fox and Glove are forced to share a stage, and then Moose’s irrepressibly excited mug plops down from the ceiling, obscuring Hat: “Is it my turn yet?” Basically, he is like an antsy kid anticipating his big star turn at M, only to be heartbroken when Mouse is given that letter’s starring role. Zebra, though frustrated, is not deaf to Moose’s offstage sobbing (look to the title for his resolution to the problem). Ideal for kids who are past struggling to learn the alphabet and who will fully get the humor in Moose’s goofy antics.
