이 책은 제2차 세계대전 당시 나치의 홀로코스트(유태인 학살)을 피해 약 2년 7개월간 다락방에 숨어 지냈던 열 살 소녀 애니와 둘째 언니인 스무 살 씨니의 이야기입니다. 저자의 자전적 소설로 애니가 바로 저자입니다.
독일의 히틀러가 집권하자 아빠는 가족을 모두 이끌고 미국으로 가고 싶어 하지만 엄마가 병사하는 바람에 결국 우여곡절 끝에 씨니와 애니는 한적한 시골의 한 농가의 2층방에 숨어 살게 됩니다. 그 때는 그 생활이 무려 2년 7개월이나 지속될 줄 꿈에도 몰랐지요.
이들을 숨겨준 농부 가족은 씨니와 애니를 숨겨줌으로써 자신들의 신변에 닥칠 일들을 두려워하면서도 결국 두 소녀를 나치로부터 지켜줍니다. 사춘기 소녀들인 씨니와 애니는 다투기도 하고 화해하기도 하면서, 기나긴 시간이었던 거의 3년에 가까운 피난 생활을 끝내고 결국은 가족이 다시 재회하게 됩니다.
너무나 답답하여 힘들어하는 두 소녀를 카트에 몰래 실어서 사람 키보다 키가 커서 바닥에 있으면 눈에 띄지 않는 옥수수 밭으로 데려가 돗자리를 깔아주어 햇살을 즐기게 해 주는 자칭 '무식한 농부(dumb farmer)' 아저씨의 따뜻함과 대담함에 가슴이 뭉클해 집니다.

Mrs. Reiss was born in Holland. After the war, she attended high school and col-lege and taught elementary school there for several years before coming to the United States. She has been a consulting editor for Atlas magazine and now lives in New York City. Every few years the family travels to Europe, to visit relatives and to spend several days with the unforgettable Oostervel family. |
