[ 책 소개 ]
Caldecott상을 수상한 Smoky Night를 비롯해서 수많은 명작 그림책의 글을 쓴 Eve Bunting(글)과 "내게 금지된 17가지"를 비롯해서 다수의 베스트셀러 그림책 저자인 Nancy Carpenter가 힘을 합쳐 만든 명작 그림책입니다. 전작인 Little Bear's Little Boat는 국내에서 "꼬마 곰과 작은 배"라는 제목으로 번역서가 출간되었으며, 이 책은 그 작은 곰이 몸집이 커져서 이제는 큰 배를 마련해야 하는 내용을 담고 있습니다.
몸집이 커져버리는 바람에 어릴 때 탓던 작은 배는 작은 곰에게 물려주고, 큰 곰은 자신의 몸집에 맞는 큰 배를 만들기로 합니다. 나무판들을 이용해서 자신이 꿈꿔왔던 멋진 배를 드디어 완성하고 배를 호수에 띄우려고 하는데 큰 곰의 친구들이 배에 대해 한마디씩 하네요.
비버는 큰배에 어울리는 돛을 달아야 한다고 하고,
수달은 갑판이 있어야 한다고 하며,
학은 들어가서 잘 수 있는 캐빈이 필요하다고 조언해 줍니다.
큰 곰은 친구들의 조언대로 돛대와 갑판과 캐빈을 만들었습니다만, 다 만들고 난 후 좀 떨어져서 배를 바라보니 자기가 원했던 모습과는 전혀 다른 배가 되었음을 깨닫게 됩니다. 돛대는 기울고, 갑판은 삐툴삐툴하며, 캐빈은 엉성한 모습이네요.
큰 곰은 자기에게 도움말을 해준 친구들의 마음을 상하지 않도록 조심스럽게 양해를 구한 후, 큰 배를 원래 자기가 원했던 모습으로 다시 돌려 놓습니다. 완성된 배를 호수에 띄운 후, 노를 저어서 호수 가운데로 나아간 후 물고기도 잡고, 낮잠도 자고, 지는 해와 뜨는 달, 그리고 별똥별도 바라보며 행복한 하루를 보냅니다...
몸과 마음이 자라면서 어렸을 때 가지고 놀았던 장남감들은 동생에게 물려주고, 자신은 더 큰 세계를 향해 자신만의 주관을 갖고 한발 한발 나아가야 한다는 것을 깨닫게 해주는 내용입니다.

A sweet story about the simple happiness that comes from staying true to oneself. Big Bear outgrows his old boat and decides to build himself a bigger one. It is perfect: “You are just what I dreamed you would be,” Big Bear says. But his friends suggest improvements: a mast, a top deck, and a cabin, which turn the boat into a bit of a mess. Big Bear politely thanks his pals for their input, but says, “This boat is not my dream,” returns the boat to its original form, and happily rows around the lake. This follow-up to Bunting's Little Bear's Little Boat (Clarion, 2003) illustrates life lessons on listening to one's inner voice and respectfully sharing differences of opinion with a light touch. The quiet, straightforward text is in perfect harmony with the peaceful illustrations of the lake on which the animals live. Carpenter's pen, ink, and digital media images have a classic look.
