그런데 어느 날, 그는 이 모든 것을 그만두고 뮌헨에 건너가 그림 공부를 시작하지요. 처음에는 유명한 선생님들이 가르쳐 주는 대로 그림을 그렸지만, 그는 곧 이제까지 전혀 보지 못했던, 아주 새로운 그림을 그리게 됩니다. 그게 바로 추상 미술이지요. 초기 추상화를 시도한 칸딘스키는 아주 유명한 화가가 되었고, 추상화가 현대 미술의 주류가 되면서 칸딘스키 또한 미술사에 큰 족적을 남기게 됩니다.

그런데 칸딘스키에게는 남들이 알지 못하는 비밀이 있었어요. 그는 색과 색이 섞였을 때 ‘쉬익’ 하는 소리를 들었습니다. 그리고 오페라를 듣고 마음속에서 튀어나오는 무수한 색의 향연을 보고 들었지요. 어떻게 해서 이런 일이 가능했던 걸까요? 추상 미술이라는 주제는 얼핏 어른들에게도 어렵게 느껴질 수 있지만, 이 책에서는 어린아이들도 이해할 수 있을 만큼 쉽고 명쾌하게 설명합니다. 예쁜 풍경이나 예쁜 여자를 주로 그리곤 했던 당대에 칸딘스키는 사람들이 쉽게 이해할 수 없는 그림을 그렸습니다. 하지만 어린 칸딘스키가 처음 그린 추상화는 너무나 간단하고 본능적인 그림이었지요.

Richly colored, large acrylic paint and paper collage pictures illustrate the life of Vasily Kandinsky, one of the first painters of abstract art. As a young boy, Vasya was given a paint box, and when he first mixed colors, he was amazed to find he could hear the colors he created. Throughout his early life, Kandinsky struggled to live as others expected but couldn’t forget his exhilarating experiences with painting. Even after giving in and taking lessons, he was unable to suppress the need to create his own style of art. He would see colors and hear music, hear music and see colors. Art should make you feel.
