모카는 부러울 것이 없는 착한 개입니다. 주인인 미셸의 돌봄 아래 완벽한 삶을 살고 있지요. 그런데 어느날 미셸이 늑대에 관한 책을 읽어 주면서 개도 늑대와 같은 종류라고 말해 준 이후로 모카의 인생관(견생관?)이 180도 바뀌게 됩니다.

자연 속에서 자유롭게 뛰어 다니고, 야생동물을 사냥해서 배를 채우며, 밤 늦게 달을 보고 울부짖어도 뭐라 하는 사람이 없는 늑대의 인생은 모카에게는 부러움 그 자체였습니다. 그에 반해 자신의 삶은 목줄에, 개밥에, 밤에는 짖지도 못하고, 특히 미셸이 티파티를 한답시고 자신에게 이상한 옷을 입히는 것은 도저히 견딜 수 없었지요. 모카는 진심으로 늑대가 되고 싶었습니다.

그래서 어느날, 모카는 집을 탈출해서 산으로 달려갔습니다. 그리고 외쳤습니다. "나는 자유다!!!" 마음껏 달리고, 점프하고, 춤추고, 아무데나 용변 보고... 온 세상이 자기 것만 같았지요.

곧 배가 고파지자, 모카는 늑대같이 사냥을 하기로 합니다. 하지만... 토끼는 자기보다 훨씬 빠르고, 스컹크는 방귀를 껴서 기겁하게 만들고, 딱정벌레는 집게로 코를 물어 버리고, 심지어 들쥐마저 모카를 놀리네요...

With an effective variety of page layouts, the expressive pen-and-watercolor pictures show him dashing off on his adventures, where he jumped and danced and "peed wherever he wanted." But finding food is difficult, and his final goal, to howl like a wolf, proves scary, indeed, as reflected in the large, dark sky that dwarfs the little dog. Thanks to excellent pacing, children will get caught up in the childlike Moka's emotions: the pleasure of being free, the loneliness of night, and the exuberant reunion with Michelle, captured in a large, light-filled close-up. A final twist provides the perfect end to this appealing tale that will lend itself to storytime or one-on-one reading.
