베스트셀러 그림책 Dinotrux의 저자인 크리스 갈의 대표작입니다. 국내에서는 "우린 너무 달라!"라는 제목으로 번역서가 출간된 명작 그림책입니다.

이책에는 조금은 멍청해 보이지만 사랑스러운 개 한 마리와, 깍쟁이 같긴 해도 똑똑하고 매력적인 고양이 한 마리가 등장합니다. 각각 버튼 아저씨와 버튼 아주머니와 함께 집에 도착한 개와 고양이는 서로 잘 지내보기 위해 노력합니다.

하지만 둘 사이에는 너무나 다른 점이 많지요.

부산스러운 개와 차분한 고양이,
항상 너저분하게 어질러놓고 사는 개와 언제나 깔끔하게 정리하고 사는 고양이,
낮에 주로 활동하는 개와 밤에 생기가 도는 고양이,
움직이는 것은 냄새를 맡고 싶어하는 개와 발톱을 세워 잡고 싶어하는 고양이 등등등..

둘이는 너무나도 서로 맞지 않다 보니 서로에 대해서 기분이 상하고 말지요. 자신의 생각으로는 전혀 이해가 되지 않는 상대방의 행동에 화를 내고, 따지기를 반복하더니 심지어는 방 한가운데 담을 쌓고야 맙니다. 게다가 서로를 골탕 먹이기 위해 밤낮을 가리지 않고 고군분투하네요. 이 둘의 사이는 영영 가까와질 수 없는 걸까요?

아이들은 세상에서 제일 재미있는 개와 고양이의 다툼을 구경하다 보면 이 둘 사이에 ‘이해’와 ‘배려’가 빠져있다는 사실을 깨닫게 됩니다. 개와 고양이의 이야기를 통해 친구간의 싸움이 어떻게 벌어지는지, 어떻게 하면 싸움을 피할 수 있는지를 생각해 보게 되는 것이지요. ‘내가 이런 행동을 하면 친구가 기분이 나쁠 수 있구나.’, ‘친구는 저렇게 생각할 수 있구나.’라는 생각과 함께 말입니다.

What is 하드커버? 양장본이라고도 불리우며, 표지가 단단한 판지로 만들어진 책입니다. 판지를 천이나 가죽으로 감싸기도 합니다. 책의 속지는 일반적으로 중성처리된 종이(Acid-free paper)를 사용해서 잘 변질이 되지 않기 때문에 오랫동안 보관하기에 적합합니다. 이 종류의 책은 더스트 재킷, 또는 더스트 커버로 불리는 표지덮개가 함께 있는 경우가 많습니다. 간혹 내부 속지가 콩기름 코팅이 된 경우 고약한 냄새가 나는 책도 있습니다.

Starting with illustrations on the endpapers, readers know immediately that they are in for a treat with this picture book. On the same day, Mr. Buttons returns home with a "friendly-looking dog," while Mrs. Buttons find the perfect "smart-looking cat." Clearly, these newcomers are not going to get along, and each one sets out to make the other leave ("Dog rubbed some party balloons on the rug and stuck them to cat. Cat popped them with sharp claws, nearly giving Dog a heart attack. Cat filled Dog's water bowl with hairballs. Dog poured the water over Cat's head during naptime."). The exaggerated traits of both animals are wonderful. Small details, such as the dogs at the animal shelter holding signs saying "I'll be your best friend" and "I want to lick you!" are a hilarious contrast to the cats in the pet store window with signs such as, "And you are?" and "I'm kind of a big deal." The colored-pencil illustrations are remarkable, and the animals' dialogue, expressions, and body language are priceless, as is the funny conclusion. A terrific addition to any friendship or pet storytime.
