2016년에 그해 출간된 가장 훌륭한 어린이 그림책에 수여하는 Caldecott Medal을 받은 책입니다. 칼데콧(Caldecott)상은 미국 어린이도서관협회에서 매년 가장 뛰어난 그림책을 그린 작가에게 주는 상으로 그림책의 노벨상이라 불리며, 뉴베리 상과 함께 미국에서 가장 권위 있는 아동 문학상으로 꼽힙니다.

이 책은 국내에서는 "위니를 찾아서"라는 제목으로 번역서가 출간되었습니다.

영국 작가 밀른(A.A. Milne)의 유명한 동화 "위니 더 푸(Winnie-the-Pooh)"의 주인공이자 디즈니 애니메이션의 주인공 ‘곰돌이 푸’가 실제 존재한 곰을 모티브로 탄생했다는 사실을 아는 사람은 많지 않을 것입니다. 게다가 이 곰은 작품과 달리 암컷이었다고 합니다.

이러한 사실들은 『위니를 찾아서』가 미국에서 출간되었을 때(2015.10.20) 널리 알려지면서 여러 잡지와 온라인 커뮤니티에서 크게 화제를 모은 바 있다.

1914년 1차 대전 당시 캐나다의 해리 콜번이란 수의사가 입대를 하게 됩니다. 부대로 가던 중 우연히 사냥꾼에게 잡힌 새끼 곰을 보게 되고 뭔가에 이끌려 그 곰을 사서 부대로 데려옵니다. 그러고는 자신이 살던 캐나다의 도시 위니펙의 이름을 따 “위니(Winnie)"라 이름 지었습니다.

위니는 수의사가 속한 부대에서 함께 지내게 되고 참전을 위해 대서양을 건널 때 그들과 함께 영국으로 가게 됩니다. 하지만 부대가 유럽 대륙의 전투에 참가해야 할 때, 수의사 해리는 어쩔 수 없이 위니를 런던 동물원에 맡기게 됩니다. 여기서 해리와 위니의 이야기는 끝나고 또 다른 이야기가 시작됩니다.

런던 동물원에 있는 위니를 특별한 친구로 여긴 한 아이가 있었고, 아이의 아버지는 그 모습에 영감을 받아 ‘곰돌이 푸’ 이야기를 쓰게 됩니다. 아이의 아버지가 쓴 이 ‘곰돌이 푸’ 이야기를 통해 위니는 세상에서 가장 유명한 곰이 되었지요. 전쟁을 겪어 내는 힘든 시기에는 병사들에게 큰 사랑을 받았고, 동화가 출간된 1926년 이후로는 전 세계의 많은 어린이들에게 웃음과 따스함을 나누어주면서 사람들의 기억 속에 오래도록 자리잡게 됩니다.

이 책의 작가는 이야기에 등장하는 수의사 해리 콜번의 실제 증손녀이며, 책 속에서 아들에게 이야기를 들려주는 구성으로 독자들에게 실제 이야기와 작품을 연결 짓도록 도와줍니다.
