거스는 대도시의 중심부에 있는 커다란 동물원에 살고 있는 북극곰입니다. 거스의 곁에는 언제나 친구 북극곰인 아이다가 함께 있었지요. 서로 의지하고, 함께 놀고, 늘 단짝으로 지내던 두 북극곰에게 슬픈 일이 벌어집니다. 아이다가 병에 걸렸어요. 그리고 동물원 관리인으로부터 아이다의 병세가 너무 심해서 회복될 가망성이 없다는 얘기를 듣습니다. 거스는 이 얘기를 듣자마자 바로 아이다가 누워있는 동굴로 달려가서 엉엉 울면서 자기를 떠나가지 마라고 큰 소리를 질렀습니다. 아이다와 거스는 온 동물원이 쩡쩡 울릴 정도로 큰 소리로 울었습니다.
울음을 그친 두 북극곰은 조용히 바위 위에 올라가서 얼굴을 맞대고 서로의 숨소리를 느꼈습니다. 아이다는 자기가 어디를 가든 언제나 생선 냄새가 나는 거스의 호흡을 느낄 거라고 말했습니다. 그날 이후 아이다는 굴 속에서 거의 움직이지 않고 늘 잠을 자며 지냈습니다. 거스는 그런 아이다를 위해 장난감과 생선을 가져다 주고 관람객이 쾌유를 기원하며 쓴 메모지들도 가져다 줬습니다.
