국내에는 《우리 집이 더 높아》 《달에서 만나자》 《톡톡톡 365 숫자가 잘잘잘》등 다수의 번역서가 출간된 인기 그림책 작가인 지안나 마리노의 대표작 중 하나입니다. 이 책 역시 국내에는 《한밤중에 동물들이》라는 제목으로 번역서가 출간되었습니다.

많은 아이들이 어둠을 두려워합니다. 밤이 되면 캄캄한 어둠 속에 뭔가 무시무시한 것이 숨어 있을 것 같아 마음을 졸이지요. 이 책은 이렇듯 어둠을 무서워하는 아이들의 모습을 꼭 닮은 야행성 동물들이 등장합니다. 자기들이 야행성 동물이라는 것도 잊은 채 밤이 무섭다며 우왕좌왕하는 동물들의 모습은 아이들에게 웃음을 안겨 주고 어둠에 대한 두려움을 덜어 주지요.

이야기와 더불어 그림을 보는 재미 또한 쏠쏠합니다. 주머니쥐처럼 작은 동물부터 회색곰처럼 큰 동물까지 점점 큰 동물들이 등장할 때마다 각 동물들의 습성과 생김새 등을 묘사하여 재치 있게 풀어내는 이야기를 읽다 보면 여러 야행성 동물들에 대해 자연스럽게 익히게 됩니다. 책 커버의 뒷면에는 책 속에서 그려진 야행성 동물들에 대한 설명이 수록되어 있습니다.

What is 하드커버? 양장본이라고도 불리우며, 표지가 단단한 판지로 만들어진 책입니다. 판지를 천이나 가죽으로 감싸기도 합니다. 책의 속지는 일반적으로 중성처리된 종이(Acid-free paper)를 사용해서 잘 변질이 되지 않기 때문에 오랫동안 보관하기에 적합합니다. 이 종류의 책은 더스트 재킷, 또는 더스트 커버로 불리는 표지덮개가 함께 있는 경우가 많습니다. 간혹 내부 속지가 콩기름 코팅이 된 경우 고약한 냄새가 나는 책도 있습니다.

A great cover design - a scared-looking opossum, stark black background, and the title in shiny silver lettering - will grab kids' attention. Endpapers in black, relieved only by three pairs of wide open eyes, will build suspense. As the story begins, Possum is hiding in the woods when a friendly skunk comes along. Possum spreads a fear of "night animals" to the skunk, then a wolf, and a bear. It takes a calm bat to explain to them that they are night animals. The illustrations include a lot of visual humor, as in Possum "playing possum" by acting dead and Skunk spraying "perfume" each time they get scared. The inside of the cover includes scientific facts about the animals, which is a nice feature that unfortunately will present processing challenges for many libraries. VERDICT A good title to share with children who may be afraid of the dark to help them see the lighter side of fear.
