Newbery 상은 해마다 미국 도서관 협회(American Library Association)에서 그 해의 가장 뛰어난 어린이 문학책에 수여하는 상이며, 한 작품에 Medal상을, 그리고 2~5편의 작품에 Honor상을 수여합니다. 이 상은 18세기에 영국에서 세계 최초로 아동문학책을 출간하여 상업적으로 성공을 거둔 출판인 John Newbery의 업적을 기리기 위해 1922년에 제정되었으며, 현재는 아동문학 분야의 세계에서 가장 권위있는 상으로 인정받고 있습니다.

링과 팅은 일란성 쌍둥이입니다. 갈색 눈색깔도 똑같고, 얼굴 생김새도 똑같고, 옷차림도 똑같고, 머리색도 똑같이 검은색입니다. 사람들은 이 둘을 보고 "너희 둘은 정말 똑같다"고 말합니다. 하지만 링과 팅의 꼭 닮은 외모와는 달리, 생각과 성격은 많이 다르답니다.
이 책은 같으면서도 다른 린과 팅이 벌리는, 반전이 있어서 더욱 재미있는 에피소드 6편이 수록되어 있습니다.
팅이 정원에 컵케익을 심으려고 합니다. 링은 컵케익이 씨앗이 아니기 때문에 심어도 소용이 없다고 말해줍니다. 하지만 팅은 링의 말을 듣지 않고 컵케익을 심은 후 물을 주고 정성스럽게 돌봤습니다. 그러나 컵케익에서 싹이 나올 리 없지요. 결국 팅은 씨앗에서만 싹이 자란다는 링의 말이 옳다는 것을 깨닫게 됩니다. 그리고 Bean(콩)은 심어도 되는 씨앗이냐고 묻습니다. 링이 Bean은 씨앗이라고 말해주자 팅이 심으려고 가져온 것은... Jelly Bean(콩 모양으로 만든 젤리사탕)...

Those irrepressible twins are back with more sweetly goofy antics in a third installment of the easy reader series. Six short chapters deliver on the title's promise; each episode unfolds with pitch-perfect comedic timing, ending with a chuckle-worthy (and decidedly silly) punch line. From forays into gardening (Will cupcakes grow if planted like seeds?) to musing about how high they can swing (Higher than a tree that goes into outer space!), the girls' lives are grounded in realistic childhood experiences, embellished with their creative imaginings. Lin helps emergent readers tell the difference through clever visual cues; the pretend and "what if" scenarios are distinguished by squiggly frames. As in the first two books, the gouache illustrations pop with vibrant color and texture. Lin's images help support the text, while extending the humor with subtle details in facial expressions and body language. Though each chapter can be enjoyed on its own, the various threads come together in the last chapter when the sisters co-create their own story - a book within the book. Fans of Ling and Ting will be delighted to see a few nods to previous adventures, while new readers will want to get to know these funny sisters better. A winning addition to a delightfully fun series. |
