미국과 소련 간의 우주경쟁이 치열했던 1960~70년대에 미국 NASA에서 근무했던 흑인 여성 수학자 캐서린 존슨은 유인우주비행선을 위한 궤도 역학의 계산에서 미국 최초 및 그 이후의 성공에 결정적인 역할을 했습니다.
어려서부터 수학에 남다른 재능을 보여줬던 캐서린 존슨은 3학년이나 월반할 정도로 천재적인 소녀였으나, 당시에는 흑백 인종차별이 심하던 때여서 캐서린이 살던 곳에 있던 고등학교에 들어갈 수가 없었습니다. 아버지는 캐서린을 위해 흑인고등학교가 있는 웨스트버지니아로 이사했습니다.
불과 18살에 웨스트버지니아 대학교를 졸업한 후, 흑인여성이라는 이유로 자신이 원했던 연구소나 기업에 취업할 수 없었던 캐서린은 흑인 초등학교에서 수학을 가르치다 NASA에 수학자로 취직하게 됩니다. NASA에서 캐서린은 수학적 재능이 꽃을 피우게 되고, 우주선 궤도와 아폴로 달 착륙선과 왕복선의 랑데부 경로등 우주 비행선에 대한 궤적 계산, 발사 및 비상 반환 경로 등을 개발하는 큰 업적을 남깁니다.
특히 1970년에 발사된 달탐사선 아폴로 13호가 우주에서 폭발사고가 발생해서 우주선에 타고 있던 우주선조종사 3명이 모두 사망할 위험에 처하게 되자, 캐서린은 비상 귀한 경로를 계산해서 무사히 지구로 돌아오게 하는데 큰 공헌을 세웁니다...
