이 책은 클로이라는 소녀의 내레이션으로 전개됩니다. 클로이가 보기에 빨간 머리의 왜소한 소년 에이드리언 심콕스는 헛된 꿈이나 꾸는 아이입니다. 늘 아이들에게 ‘하얀 털과 황금빛 갈기를 가진 아름다운 말’ 이야기나 지어내는 아이지요. 그래서 클로이는 에이드리언이 못마땅하고, 에이드리언의 말에 한 번도 귀를 기울이지 않고, 눈을 맞추고 이야기를 나누지도 않았습니다. 클로이에게 에이드리언은 학교에서 무료급식을 먹고, 책상정리도 제대로 못하는 아이일 뿐입니다. 그런 에이드리언이 자꾸 말 이야기를 늘어놓자 클로이는 아이들 앞에서 “에이드리언은 말이 없다!”고 소리치며 거짓말쟁이로 몰아부칩니다. 이 일을 안 클로이의 엄마는 딸과 함께 에이드리언의 집을 방문하고, 그날 처음으로 클로이는 자신이 그동안 에이드리언을 섣부르게 판단했다는 걸 깨닫게 됩니다.

그림책의 화자는 주인공 소녀 클로이이고, 에이드리언에 대한 모든 정보와 판단은 클로이의 내레이션을 통해 독자에게 전달됩니다. 그래서 페이지를 넘기며 독자는 점점 궁금해집니다. 정말 에이드리언은 거짓말이나 일삼는 아이일까. 있지도 않은 말을 기른다고 아이들에게 떠벌리는 그런 소년일까.

클로이 뿐 아니라 독자도 세상에서 가장 아름다운 에이드리언의 말을 발견하는 순간 잠시 숨을 멈출 수밖에 없습니다. 코리나 루이켄은 보이지 않는 것을 보이게 하는 마법을 그림책에서 펼쳐냈습니다.
