1992년에 있었던 실화를 바탕으로 엮은 이야기입니다. 중국에서 미국 타코마로 오리, 비버, 개구리, 거북이 등의 모양을 한 욕조용 놀이완구 29,000여개를 운반하는 화물선이 폭풍우를 만나 전복하는 바람에, 배에 실렸던 완구들이 바다에 빠져서 해류를 따라 전 세계로 떠다니게 됩니다. 이들 완구들은 알래스카, 북극, 워싱턴 주, 북대서양 등 세계 여러 곳에서 발견되어 과학자들에게 해류와 바람의 이동에 관한 좋은 연구자료를 제공해 줬다고 합니다.

물놀이용 오리장난감을 싣고가던 배가 폭풍우를 만나는 바람에 장난감 10개가 들어 있는 박스가 바닷물에 빠지게 됩니다. 상자 안에 있던 장난감 오리들은 바닷물 위에 둥둥 떠서 머나먼 여행을 시작하지요.

첫번째 오리장난감은 서쪽을 향해 떠다니다가 점프하는 돌고래를 만나게 되고, 두번째 오리장난감은 동쪽으로 떠다니다가 꽥꽥 짖어대는 물개를 만나게 되고, 세번째 오리장난감은 북쪽으로 표류하다 으르렁대는 북극곰을 만났으며, 네번째 오리장난감은 남쪽으로 떠내려가서 자기를 뚫어져라 쳐다보는 플라멩고를 만나게 됩니다.

10마리의 오리장난감들은 전 세계로 흩어져서 떠다니다가 다양한 동물들을 만나게 되고, 마지막 10번째 오리장난감은 오리 가족을 만나서 한 가족이 되어 “Quack!” “Squeak!” 반갑게 인사를 나눕니다.
