뉴욕타임즈 베스트셀러 "The Bear Ate Your Sandwich"의 저자인 줄리아 사콘 로치가 만든 또 하나의 곰 이야기입니다.

가게 이름이 "작은곰 베이커리"인 제과점에는 이름이 "머핀"인 고양이가 살고 있습니다. 머핀은 밤이 되어서 가게문을 닫으면, 생쥐, 너구리, 박쥐 등이 내는 소리에 귀를 기울이며 가게를 지킵니다. 그런데 어제밤에 머핀은 전에 들어보지 못했던 이상한 소리를 들었습니다. "그르렁그르렁~~~"

머핀은 그 소리의 주인공이 누구인지 궁금해서 가게 안으로 들어갔는데, 그곳에는 배고픈 아기곰이 앉아 있었습니다. 그 이상한 그르렁거리는 소리는 배고픈 아기곰의 배에서 나는 소리였지요.

머핀은 아기곰에게 가게 안에 있는 과자와 도너츠와 케익을 줬습니다. 배부르게 먹은 아기곰에게서 마침내 그르렁거리는 소리가 사라지고 다시 모든 것이 조용해졌지요.

그런데 이상한 기척을 느껴서 뒤를 돌아보니 어둠 속에 커다란 두눈이 반짝이고 있네요. 어미곰이 아기곰을 찾으러 온 것이었어요. 어미곰은 아기곰과 머핀을 꼭 껴안아 줬어요. 엄마곰의 품은 따뜻하고 폭신해서 머핀은 자신도 모르게 갸르릉거리는 소리를 냈어요. 이제 창밖이 밝아오고 어미곰은 아기곰을 데리고 숲으로 돌아갔어요. 물론 가게 안은 엉망이 되었지요...

Contrary to what the name implies, there are no bears at The Little Bear Bakery…just ask Muffin the orange marmalade cat. "I'm the whiskers of this neighborhood. And if it flutters, scurries, or scampers here, I know about it." The feline is tops at identifying every, "Scratch scratch squeak" and "Clang crash crunch crunch." So, when she hears an unfamiliar, "grrrrrr," she knows this is not an everyday mouse or raccoon. In fact, it is a small bear with a rumbling tummy. The kindly Muffin offers up chocolate cake, donuts, and cookies to quiet the rumbles, but soon realizes that they have company. "It was an enormous bear. It smelled like the dumpster on a hot day and rumbled louder than the vacuum cleaner." After a thank you hug, it downs some rainbow sprinkles and exits with its baby through the back window as the sun rises. Muffin is ready for a nap after her exciting night shift just as the baker awakens to an inexplicable, jaw-dropping mess. The illustrations, rendered in acrylic, paint, cut paper, and markers with a palette of blues, black, orange, and yellow, are reminiscent of Don Freeman's work. The front endpapers feature a scrumptious array of iced buns, cookies, donuts, and eclairs, while the back ones show the remnants of the night's feast - nothing but crumbs and a half-eaten donut near a small gray mouse exclaiming, "I love sprinkles!" VERDICT This is not only a winning read-aloud, but also an excellent choice to introduce a mystery unit or a mini-lesson on onomatopoeia or simile.
