자크 쿠스토는 좀 더 쉽게 바닷 속을 탐험하기 위해 스쿠바라고 불리우는 인공폐(산소통+호흡기)를 발명했으며, 원활한 수중 촬영을 위해 방수카메라도 만들었습니다. 그리고 칼립소라고 이름지어진 배도 구입해서 전 세계 바다를 누비면서 해양생태계에 대해 연구도 하고 촬영도 했습니다.

쿠스토와 동료들은 해저 350미터까지 잠수할 수 있는 2인용 잠수정과 500미터까지 잠수할 수 있는 1인용 잠수정도 만들었으며, 지중해 바다에서는 오래된 유물들도 다수 발견했습니다.

남극해와 아프리카 연안을 비롯해서 전 세계 바다를 탐험하던 자크 쿠스토는 바다의 오염이 점점 심각해짐을 목도하고 나중에는 해양환경을 보호하는 활동에 전념합니다...
