알렉산더 해밀턴은 미국 초대 재무장관으로서 달러화와 미국 중앙은행을 만드는 등 미국의 현재와 미래를 위해 거대한 구상을 하고 그 기틀을 세운 미국의 가장 중요한 건국공신 중 1인으로 여겨지는 인물입니다. 그의 부인이었던 엘리자는 1757년에 매우 부유한 집안에서 태어났으며, 어려서부터 노예제도를 반대해서 집안의 흑인들을 모두 노예에서 자유인으로 풀어줬습니다. 23세에 엘리자는 명문가와 결혼시키려는 부모의 뜻에도 불구하고 독립전쟁중이던 당시에 총사령관 워싱턴장군(나중에 미국의 초대 대통령이 됨)의 보좌관이었던 알렉산더를 만나 바로 결혼을 합니다. 금술이 좋았던 부부는 이후 24년을 함께 살며 8명의 자녀를 둡니다.

남편이 47세에 사고로 죽은 후, 남편을 너무나도 사랑했던 엘리자는 남편을 기리는 시를 넣어둔 조그만 벨벳주머니를 평생동안 차고 살았다고 합니다. 엘리자는 이후 50년을 더 살며 평생동안 불쌍한 어린이들을 돕는 일을 하면서 살았습니다. 남편이 남긴 토지와 유산을 기부해서 집 근처에 가난한 아이들을 위한 학교를 세웠으며, 기금을 조성해서 미국 최초의 고아원을 건립했습니다...
