2021년도 Caldecott 수상작인 "Outside in"와 국내에도 번역서가 출간된 "베스트셀러 그림책인 "The Quiet Book(조용한 그림책)"과 "The Loud Book(시끄러운 그림책)"의 작가인 데보라 언더우드의 재미있는 그림책입니다.

옛날 옛적에 높은 벽으로 둘러쌓인 마을 안에 알파벳들이 살고 있었어요. 그런데 그곳에 사는 알파벳들은 모두 대문자 H와 소문자 h 뿐이었어요. 말할 때도 오직 "H" 철자 하나만 사용하기 때문에, 높은 벽돌담 안에 사는 H들은 안전했지만 삶이 매우 단조롭고 지루했지요. 그리고 다른 알파벳들도 모두 높은 성벽 안에서 외부의 다른 알파벳들과 소통하지 않고 자기들 끼리만 모여서 살고 있었어요.

그러던 어느날 조그만 소문자 h 하나가 바깥세상에 대해 호기심이 생기기 시작했어요. 그리고 벽돌담 아래에 조그만 구멍이 뚫려 있는 것을 발견하고, 구멍을 들여다 보자 그곳에는 위험해 보이지 않는 소문자 i가 구멍을 통해 이쪽을 쳐다보고 있었지요. h와 i는 서로 손을 뻗어 친구가 되고 함께 "hi"를 만들었어요. 그런데 이 모습을 대문자 H에게 들키게 되고, 구멍은 곧바로 시멘트로 메워져 버렸지요.

새로 사귄 친구 i를 만나지 못하게 된 h는 여러장의 종이에다 h를 써서 종이비행기를 만들어 i에게 날렸는데, 그 중 하나가 소문자 o에게 날라갔고, 이 종이비행기의 아이디어는 점점 다른 소문자 알파벳들에게 퍼져서 서로서로 자신의 알파벳을 적은 종이비행기를 다른 알파벳에게 날리기 시작했습니다.

이제 소문자 알파벳들은 여러개를 모아서 단어를 만들기 시작했고, 이 일을 처음 시작했던 h는 "up"이라는 단어를 발견하고는 이 단어를 다른 알파벳에게 퍼트렸습니다. "up"이라는 단어를 본 알파벳들은 사다리를 놓고 높은 성벽 위로 올라갔으며, 그곳에서 다른 앞파벳들을 만나서 서로 손을 잡고 "together"라는 단어를 만들었어요.

이제 이런 만남은 대문자 알파벳들에게도 퍼졌으며, 높은 벽을 허물기 위해 함께 용기(Courage)를 내서 협력(Cooperate)하고 도우며(Help) 모든 벽들을 완전히 허물었지요.

이제 모든 알파벳들이 함께 어울리면서 Play(놀이), Slide(미끄럼틀), Trust(신뢰), Listening(경청), Friendship(우정) 등 여러 새로운 단어들을 만들었으며, 그리고 이들이 마지막으로 발견한 가장 중요한 단어는 바로 "LOVE"였어요.
