Book Description
Have you ever wondered how many horses it would take to do the work of one tractor? Or how many loaves of bread you could bake with the wheat held in a combine harvester?
Children's Literature
Tractors, combine harvesters, root crop harvesters, balers for straw, cotton harvesters, Land Rovers, all-terrain vehicles to herd sheep, manure loaders, monster tractors, crawler tractors, twelve wheeled tractors, slim-looking grape harvesters, seed drills, crop sprayers, hand-weeding machines, and the old-fashioned horse and plow are all featured. One of the most fascinating is the hand-weeding machine. Nine farm workers lie horizontally on a machine that pulls them slowly along the lines of plants while they pluck weeds by hand. Many of the machines readers will not have seen before, even in a book. Each double page spread highlights a different machine with lots of great color photographs and boxed text chunks give interesting nuggets of information. As with most Dorling Kindersley books, the page design is heavy on images and consequently the text is short, concise and easy to read. Sometimes the text playfully dances across the page. In one double-page spread, the words "Buzz, whirr, chomp, chomp," float above a huge combine harvester. This book includes a glossary, index, and picture gallery to identify different types of tractors. "The Machines at Work" series also features the titles Airplane, Fire Truck, and Digger. 2003, Dorling Kindersley, Ages 2 to 8. - Sally J. K. Davies |
