Madeline joined the company of story immortals in 1939, when Bemelmans introduced the lion-hearted French child to the world. The original and five sequels excited critical raves, awards and an international readership. Now the sixth saga, reprinted from a McCall's magazine feature, will be offered as a book. On Christmas Eve, the old house in Paris, covered with vines, is also swarming with germs. Miss Clavel and her charges, except Madeline, are downed by the flu. So the littlest of the 12 girls nurses the ailing ones but a mysterious caller arrives with the promise of turning a sad Yuletide into an adventure. Madeline buys 12 rugs from the turbaned visitor and tucks them around the chilly invalids until she discovers that the covers are more than comforting. They are magic. They take Madeline and her friends on a wonderful flight, bringing back the joys of the season.
The New York Times Book Review
There are only two large watercolors of Paris--one showing the Pont des Arts with the Pont Neuf in the background, the other with the 12 little girls flying over a Christmas Eve Paris. Neither of the drawings is at all satisfactory as a setting for the narrative. Nor, in fact, is the book itself. It is a major disappointment that fails to challenge the eye, fails to engage the mind and is like a rather cynically organized package tour that promises a visitto a fascinating place but never leaves the dowdy hotel.
Book Description
Now children can celebrate a Parisian Christmas with Madeline, Pepito and all their friends. In this activity book, children will have hours of fun using the seventy-five reusable stickers to fly the twelve little girls on magic carpets over the banks of the Seine, decorate a Christmas tree, or tuck the girls into bed in the old house in Paris. Sixteen pages of Christmas crafts and games, including an ornament to make, and the entire text of Madeline's Christmas are included. When children are done, they can simply put the stickers back on their sheets to play with Madeline and her friends year round. |
