자전거를 너무나도 갖고 싶어하는 헨리. 하지만 부모님은 그것을 사주실 여유가 없습니다. 그래서 헨리는 그 자전거를 사기 위해 빈 병을 모으고 운동장에서 버블검을 팔았으며 신문 배달도 하는 등 돈을 모으기 위한 여러가지 시도를 하지만 계획대로 일이 풀리지가 않습니다. 다행히도 헨리의 이웃에 사는 친구인 비저스 큄비의 도움으로 경찰서에서 하는 주인없는 자전거 경매에 가서 헌 자전거를 경매받아오는데 성공합니다. 하지만 그 자전거는 고장난 곳이 많아 부품을 사서 고쳐 보지만 결국 고치지 못합니다. 그리고 무엇보다도 그 자전거는 여자용이었습니다. 헨리는 꿈에도 그리는 빨간 자전거를 갖지 못하고 포기해야만 하는 걸까요?

Based on the endearing book by Beverly Cleary (Morrow, 1952), William Roberts does a fine job presenting the antics centered on Klickitat Street. He differentiates the voices of the numerous characters, a challenge when the key players are all kids of similar ages. Ramona's voice is particularly screechy, while Henry's is subdued. In this book, Henry has saved his money, acquired through various enterprises including the sale of cases of mysterious bubblegum found in a vacant lot, to buy a bicycle. Today's listeners may not put things in the "Bendix" and may be astonished that Henry can get a used bicycle (albeit a girl's model) for $4.04, but dogs still misbehave as do little girls like Ramona. Klickitat Street, though short on diversity, seemed a great place to grow up. This is fun family fare and fine for young readers as well.
