아이의 이름은 "Thunder Boy Junior"입니다. 천둥이 주니어라는 이름은 아빠에게서 물려받았습니다. 아빠 이름은 "Thunder Boy(천둥이)", 아들 이름은 뒤에 주니어가 더 붙어 있습니다. "Thunder Boy(천둥이)"는 보기 드문 특별한 이름입니다. 하지만 문제가 있습니다.‘힘세고 큰 천둥이’라고 불리는 아빠와 달리 아들은 천둥이는 ‘꼬마 천둥이’라고 놀리듯 불립니다.

천둥이는 아빠를 사랑하지만 아빠와 비교하여 마치 놀리듯 ‘꼬마 천둥이’라고 불리는 건 영 못마땅합니다. 천둥이는 다른 이름을 갖는다면 어떨까 궁리를 합니다. 자기의 이름을 스스로 지어보는 거지요. 천둥이는 ‘천 개의 이빨도 두려워하지 않는 자’나 ‘세상은 참 신기해’ 혹은 ‘강아지와 함께 춤을’ 같은 이름들을 생각해냅니다. 하지만 어느 것도 마음에 쏙 들지는 않았습니다. 그러다 마침내 천둥이에게 딱 어울리는 이름을 생각해냈습니다. 하늘을 환하게 밝혀줄 번쩍거리는 이름을 말입니다.

이 책은 이름 때문에 고민하는 한 소년의 이야기를 통해 ‘나는 누구인가’, ‘나는 무엇을 잘 하는가’를 생각해보게 하는 그림책입니다. 나아가 이름을 통해 아빠와 아들의 독특한 유대관계까지 풀어낸 속 깊은 책이기도 합니다. 아빠에게 이름을 물려받은 꼬마 천둥이는 자신의 이름이 마음에 들지 않습니다. 지금껏 천둥이가 해낸 멋진 일을 보여주는 자랑스러운 자기만의 이름을 갖고 싶어 합니다. “내 이름은 무슨 뜻이야?”, “내 이름은 누가 지었어?”하며 이름과 ‘나다움’에 관심을 보이는 어린이들에게 읽어주고 함께 이야기 나누기 좋은 책입니다.
