서양의 유명한 전래동요 중에 "Hey diddle diddle"이라는 노래가 있습니다.

Hey diddle diddle,
The Cat and the fiddle,
The Cow jumped over the moon,
The little Dog laughed to see such sport,
And the Dish ran away with the Spoon

어느날 밤, 이 동요에 등장하는 고양이, 소, 개에게 놀라운 일이 벌어졌습니다. 이 동요의 맨 마지막줄에 나오는 "접시와 숟가락"이 이 동요에 적힌대로 도망을 갔는데... 문제는 이들이 돌아오지 않는다는 것!

"접시와 숟가락"이 돌아오지 않으면, 밤마다 어린 아이들이 부르던 이 동요는 라임이 맞지 않게 되기 때문에 이제 더 이상 아이들로부터 사랑받을 수 없겠지요.

고양이, 소, 개는 늦기 전에 "접시와 숟가락"을 찾기로 하고 길을 나섰습니다. 그리고 처음으로 만난 포크로부터 “Little Boy Blue”라는 전래동요에 나오는 밀짚더미로 가보라는 얘기를 듣고 그곳에 갑니다만, 그곳에서 자고 있던 소년은 "접시와 숟가락"을 보지 못했다고 하네요.

다음으로 간 곳은 "Little Miss Muffet"의 집. 하지만 그곳에는 Little Miss Muffet은 없고 그 동요에 등장하는 거미만 있네요. 거미는 "Big Bad Wolf"에 등장하는 늑대에게 가보라고 합니다.

고양이, 소, 개는 늑대에게 갔습니다만, 무서운 늑대는 개를 잡아먹으려고 하네요. 이때 고양이가 기지를 발휘해서 바이올린으로 자장가를 연주하고, 늑대가 잠이 든 사이에 무사히 도망칩니다.

다음에 찾아간 곳은 "잭과 콩나무". 그리고 그곳 콩나무에서 마침내 접시와 숟가락을 찾게 되지만...

전래 동요와 전래 동화 속의 주인공들이 등장하는 기발하고 재미있는 그림책입니다.

What is 페이퍼백? 표지가 두꺼운 판지나 보드지가 아닌 비교적 얇은 종이를 사용해서 만든 책이며, 실박음질 대신에 풀로 제본처리하는 경우가 많습니다. 일반적으로 하드커버나 보드북에 비해서 가격이 저렴합니다. 소프트커버로 불리우기도 합니다. 책의 이음새 부분이 접히거나 휘는 내구성이 그리 좋지는 않은 책입니다.
