할아버지와의 아쉬운 작별 시간. 할아버지는 맥스를 꼭 껴않아 주며, 하늘에 떠 있는 달이 계속 맥스를 밝게 비춰줄 거라고 말해 줍니다.

집으로 가는 길에 달은 맥스가 타고 있는 차를 계속 따라 오네요. 맥스는 나무 뒤로 숨었다가 다시 나타나는 달을 보며 까꿍 놀이를 합니다. 언덕 위를 올라가거나 내려갈 때도, 다리를 건너거나 커브를 돌 때도, 소들이 자고 있는 들판을 지날 때도, 조그만 마을을 지날 때도, 터널을 들어갔다 나왔을 때도 달은 항상 맥스 뒤를 따라옵니다.

그런데 갑자기 먹구름이 밀려오더니 달이 사라져 버렸네요. 집에 도착해서도 달은 보이지 않았습니다. 침대에 누워서 맥스는 할아버지를 그리워했습니다. 그리고 자기를 따라오던 달도 보고 싶었지요. 맥스는 외로움을 느꼈습니다. 그런데 천천히 천천히 어두운 방 안이 부드러운 노란색 빛으로 가득 차기 시작하네요. 구름이 걷히고 환하게 빛나는 달을 보며, 맥스는 할아버지 해줬던 말이 떠올랐습니다. 달은 언제나 맥스를 위해 환하게 비출 거라고 하셨지요...
