Audrey and Don Wood seem to enjoy their work. In their book 'The NappingHouse' {BRD 1985} and in this latest creation they express an exuberance thatis quite infectious. . . . The bathtub scenes are clearly the most fun, so that when the Page, as hero, puts an end to the merriment (and does it in a rather lackluster manner)--we're disappointed. Instead of cheering the Page for his resourcefulness, we resent him. Another element disturbed me. All the characters are painted to look as if they are overacting. In a farce, even a broad farce, such elaboration is deadly. Combined with language like 'glub, glub, glub' or 'yum, yum, yum' one senses a failure to be truthful to the lighthearted nature of the story.

The story is rhythmically told with a few lines to each page and an imaginative assortment of detail in double-spread oil paintings dominated by purple and blue. Perhaps the fishing scene is most memorable, with trout arching over waterlilies and a perplexed duke struggling with hook and worm. Some tub.

In this humorously original tale, various members of the Court, all clothed in elaborate Elizabethan dress, try to dislodge the King from his bubbly tub. Instead they are drawn into it with him, to "do battle" with toy ships and warriors; to eat a lavish feast; to fish and to dance. It is the young page who finds a solution, finally, by pulling the plug. Much of the delight is in Don Wood's meticulous oil paintings, which juxtapose the starched, overdressed, "shocked" demeanor of the Court with the King's twinkling, sensual, even lascivious manner. Minute details in the paintings emphasize this contrast; the red-haired naked King frolics while the fully-clothed courtiers emerge dripping from the bath with literally all their starch taken out. A voluptuous book whose rich range of colors and tones reflect the passing hours of the day. As in the Woods' Napping House (HBJ, 1984), the few simple words of text per large, well-designed page invite storytellingbut keep the group very small, so the children can be close enough to pore over the brilliant, robust illustrations. |

 유쾌한 그림과 노래 |
뮤지컬 씨디가 뭔가 했더니... 정말 뮤지컬처럼 노래를 부르네요. 책에 있는 내용 외에 훨씬 더 많은 내용의 노래가 흘러 나와서 당황했습니다.
제가 들어도 뭔 소리인지 모르는 노래들이 갑자기 흘러나와 황당했..

제가 들어도 뭔 소리인지 모르는 노래들이 갑자기 흘러나와 황당했지만 워낙 재미있는 그림과 노래라서 무슨 내용인지 몰라도 울 애기는 넘 즐거워하네요.
그림에도 작가의 위트가 곳곳에 숨겨져 있네요.

 기다린 보람이 있었네요..^^ |
다른 책에 비해 오드리우드 작품은 하드커버가 종종 눈에 띄네요.
이 책도 참 재미있는 책인데...하드커버에 시디 세트면 참 좋겠다싶어 기다렸는데 기다린 보람이 있었네요.
오늘 올라오자마자 바로 주문했답니다..
다른 책에 비해 오드리우드 작품은 하드커버가 종종 눈에 띄네요.

그림풍이 The napping house랑 비슷한 느낌이면서 역시나 삽화그림이 넘 좋아요.
이른 아침에 목욕탕에 들어간 임금님이 종일 나올 생각을 하지 않지요.
시중드는 아니가 큰 일 났다고 외치자 기사, 왕비, 공작, 신하들이 차례로 나서지만 왕은 꿈쩍도 하지 않고..
어느덧 해가 지고 밤이 됩니다.
그런데 시중드는 아이가 임금님을 목욕통속에서 나오게 만드네요..어찌 된 일일까요???

 정말 꿈적도 않는 임금님 |
이 책은 저희 아이보다 제가 더 재미있게 본 책이에요
욕조에 들어가 나올 생각을 않는 임금님이
여왕님 신하 ...여러 사람들이 차례로 들어가 임금님을 나오게 시도하지만
결국 욕조에서 하루종일 모든것을 해..
이 책은 저희 아이보다 제가 더 재미있게 본 책이에요

마지막엔 시중드는 아이가 욕조의 물빠짐 뚜껑을 빼 버림으로서

그 모습이 아주 기발하게 그려져 있습니다.
화려하면서도 사실적으로 그려진 그림이 한번더 쳐다보게 되구요
그림만 봐도 재미있을 정도로 아주 잘 표현된 책입니다.
