앤디가 테리와의 첫 만남을 쓰기로 마음먹자마자 테리의 더러운 팬티를 먹은 상어들이 아프면서 한바탕 난리가 나고, 그 와중에 이야기는 정신없이 흘러갑니다. 부모님의 과잉보호로 늘 혼자이던 한 소년(테리)은 집에 불이 나면서 집 밖으로 나와 바다로 흘러가고, 엄격한 부모님의 교육 방식에 지친 한 소년(앤디)은 가출을 결심하고 오리 배를 타고 바다로 갑니다. 한편, 애완동물을 키우지 못하게 하는 부모님과 요트 여행을 하던 한 소녀(질)는 사고로 바닷물에 빠지고, 바다 위에 떠 있는 빙산에서 동물들을 만납니다.

이렇게 바다를 표류하던 세 주인공은 악명 높은 ‘나무머리’ 선장에게 붙잡힙니다. (나무머리 선장은 괴물 물고기 ‘고르곤졸라’에게 머리를 먹히고 나무 머리를 달고 다니면서 생긴 별명입니다.) 몰래 해적선을 탈출한 세 사람은 무사히 섬에 도착하지만 해적선은 산산조각이 납니다. 세 사람은 해적선 잔해를 모아 13층 나무 집을 짓습니다.

그런데 얼마 뒤 나무 집을 차지하려는 해적들에 맞서 앤디는 노랫말이 실제로 이루어진 경우들을 떠올리며 해적들을 나무 집으로 불러들입니다. ‘운 나쁜 열 꼬마 해적’이라는 동요의 노랫말처럼 해적들이 하나씩 곤경에 빠져 사라지고, 나무머리 선장은 상어 밥이 되며 행복한 결말을 맞습니다. 앤디와 테리는 자신들이 겪은 일을 쓰고 그려서 출판사에 전합니다.
