이 책은 미국 뉴욕에 있는 자유의 여신상이 건립되는 과정을 사실적인 그림과 함께 자세하게 소개합니다.
미국 뉴욕항의 입구에 우뚝 서있는 거대한 자유의 여신상은 미국을 대표하는 상징물입니다. 미국 독립 100주년을 기념해서 프랑스가 만들어서 보내 준 자유의 여신상은 1886년에 완공된 후 뉴욕항을 통해 들어오는 수많은 이민자에게 자유에 대한 부푼 희망을 안겨 줬습니다. 프랑스 조각가인 바르쏠디의 제안으로 시작된 자유의 여신상 건립 운동은, 수많은 프랑스 국민들이 참여하는 모금운동을 통해 자금을 마련한 후, 파리에서 본격적인 제작에 들어 갔습니다. 그리고 1884년에 완성된 후에는 214개의 조각으로 나눠서 배에 싣고 뉴욕으로 향해 갔습니다. 그리고 여러 달의 조립작업을 거쳐 마침내 1886년에 90미터에 달하는 거대한 여신상이 완성되었습니다...

At last, an outstanding picture book on the Statue of Liberty. Although Maestro simplifies the storyincluding only the most important people's names, for exampleshe still presents an accurate account of what happened. The exceptional drawings are visually delightfulprimarily in the blue-green range, although they are in full colorand cover most of every page. Human figuresworkers, touristsare included in many drawings, indicating the statue's tremendous scale. Further, the drawings involve viewers through the use of unusual perspectives and angles and by placing the statue in scenes of city life. One depicts Bartholdi sketching the statue in the foreground as he gazes at its future site on Bedloe's Island. Another is of cranes and cables supporting laborers as they put Lady Liberty's immense cloak in place over her steel frame. This title totally eclipses the previous picture book on the same subject, Nason's Our Statue of Liberty (Modern Curriculum, 1969). A section, ``Additional Information about the Statue. . . ,'' includes excellent lists of dimensions, important people who helped with construction, repairs from 1980-86, a table of dates and Emma Lazarus' poem as well as other interesting facts. There is no index, but the facts section makes this book nearly as useful to middle-grade readers doing research as many of the other new titles on this topic. It still could be complemented by Mary J. Shapiro's How They Built the Statue of Liberty (Random, 1985), with Huck Scarry's remarkable drawings. A striking book. |

우리도 큰애가 거대한 건축물에 관심이 많을때,이책 보여줬었는데,,참 좋아했습니다.
자유의 여신상 건축과정이 세밀하게 잘 그려져 있어 아이눈을 자극했나봅니다.^^

자유의 여신상에 대한 구상에서부터,설계,건축까지..모든 이야기가
어린이들 눈높이에 맞춰서 잘 설명되어 있어서 무엇보다 저도 만족하고,참 좋았습니다.
맨뒷편엔 상세하게 그 과정을 다시금 설명하고 있지요..역사,문화에 빠져있는 아이에게도 추천하고 싶어요..
다른 시리즈도 만나봤으면 좋겠네요..^^

 넘 좋은 책이에요 |
초등4학년인 딸이 받자말자 넘 좋다고 이책 시리즈로 다른책없냐고 물어서 열심히 찾아보는 중입니다.
책을 좋아해서 그림만 보고도 읽고 싶어 환장하던데, 열심히 모르는 단어 찾아보더니,
엄마 제발 우리말처럼..
초등4학년인 딸이 받자말자 넘 좋다고 이책 시리즈로 다른책없냐고 물어서 열심히 찾아보는 중입니다.
책을 좋아해서 그림만 보고도 읽고 싶어 환장하던데, 열심히 모르는 단어 찾아보더니,
엄마 제발 우리말처럼 읽어주면 안되요? 애걸복걸하다 잡니다.
요즘 넘 바빠서 엄마가 읽어주려면 일주일은 기다려야 한다했더니,
아마 낼 저 몰래 이책을 다 이해할것 같아요...벌써 그림만으로 70%는 다 알고 얘기했거든요
초등학생이시라면, 더구나 역사나,문화에 관심있는 아이라면 꼭 보여주세요
