The beauty of language through the nuances of poetry comes alive for children in this multimedia presentation. Dubbing himself the "Professor," the author gently guides children through the rhyme and reason of a variety of poetic styles with an example of each including nursery rhymes, nonsense, limerick, haiku, ballads, pastoral, sonnets, free verse, narrative and villanelle. His "Words for the Wise" defines new or arcane terms to help children better understand the verse. The second half of the book takes the reader on a historical journey to meet beloved poets and sample their work. With the accompanying CD children can listen as they read the works of Homer, Milton, Dickenson, Rossetti, Auden, Langston Hughes and Maya Angelou, among others. The expressive watercolor illustrations that fill the pages are child-like and aptly fit the mood, from the whimsy of a nursery rhyme to the dark foreboding of Poe's "The Raven." While the pages are chock full of text, sidebars, and illustrations there is an order to the design. Gr 4-8-There are plenty of collections of children's poetry available, but none like this one. The first section discusses the different forms the genre takes: nursery rhyme, narrative verse, ballad, free verse, pastoral, etc. Driscoll offers a clear explanation of each type and defines any difficult, associated vocabulary. Commentary on each example and a note on where to find the recording on the accompanying CD is provided for each selection. The second section covers individual poets from Homer to Maya Angelou and offers at least one example or excerpt from each writer's work. The brief introductions to the forms and poets are lively and often amusing. Readers will find the varied layouts and warm cartoon watercolors inviting. On the CD, a professional actor reads the selections; the music or sound that precedes each one sets the mood. This is a great resource for teachers and homeschoolers, and a must for libraries. 일단 Nursery Rhyme 부문만 한번 읽어봤는데 꽤 흥미로워요.

원주민들이 아기요람을 나뭇가지에 거는것을 본 미국초기정착민들이
이 노래를 지었다는 설이 있다네요~~
이 책 보면서 저도 공부가 될 것 같고 아이한테도 잘 설명해 줄 수 있을 것 같습니다.

시란 어두컴컴한 도서관, 먼지가 가득 쌓인 선반에 꽃힌 두꺼운 책에서나 볼 수 있는 것이 아니라 라디오에서 흘러나오는 우리가 좋아하는 노래가사에도 있고, 중독성있는 CM송에도 담겨 있답니다. 이 책은 제목 그대로 어린아이들에게 시에 대해 알려주는 입문서입니다. 하지만 굉장히 다양한 종류의 시를 소개하고 있고, 인류 역사에 길이 남을 위대한 시인들(호메로스, 세익스피어, 윌리엄 블레이크, 에드가 앨런 포 등등)의 작품도 포함하고 있어 어른들에게도 추천하고 싶어요. CD 에는 총 64종의 시가 담겨 있고, 책에는 시와 시인뿐 아니라 시에 나오는 까다로운 단어들에 대한 설명도 있어요. 두고두고 읽어볼만한 책이에요.
