수많은 매체로부터 "올해의 책"으로 선정된 "The Rabbit Listened(가만히 들어주었어)"의 저자 코리 도어펠드가 만든 또 하나의 대표작입니다.

집이 없는 떠돌이개는 자기를 향해 웃어주고 손을 흔드는 소녀를 따라갑니다. 하지만 엄마가 태워주는 자전거를 타고가던 소녀는 금새 시야에서 사라지고, 떠돌이개는 다시 혼자가 됩니다. 쌩쌩 달리는 차들은 무섭고, 개를 산책시키는 가족을 보니 외로움을 느낍니다. 배가 고파서 맛있는 냄새에 이끌려 들어간 제과점에서는 "나쁜 개"라는 소리를 듣고 쫓겨납니다.

그러다 아까 자기에게 웃으며 손을 흔들어주던 소녀를 발견하고는 뒤를 쫓아가서 공원에 들어갑니다. 소녀는 떠돌이개에게 과자를 주고, 허겁지겁 과자를 먹는 사이에 소녀는 다시 사라졌습니다. 하지만 분수대에서 소녀가 놓고 간 곰돌이 인형을 발견한 떠돌이개는 이 인형을 소녀에게 돌려주기로 합니다.

인형을 물고서 복잡한 도로도 건너고, 비도 맞고, 개울도 건너서 마침내 소녀의 집 앞에 도착한 떠돌이개가 "멍멍" 짖자, 인형을 잃어버려서 슬퍼하던 소녀는 한걸음에 달려 나오네요. 소녀의 가족은 영리하고 사랑스러운 떠돌이개를 입양하기로 합니다...

부드럽고 굵은 검정색의 윤곽선으로 그려진 코리 도어펠드 특유의 부드러운 파스텔풍 그림이 떠돌이개의 영리함과 귀여움을 잘 표현하고 있으며, 문장들은 딱 2단어씩으로 만들어졌지만 떠돌이개의 고군분투하는 여정과 그때그때 변하는 감정들이 독자에게 잘 전달됩니다. 해피엔딩으로 끝나는 마무리가 독자에게 큰 만족감을 줍니다.
