국내에도 번역서가 출간된 Blue Chicken(파랗게 파랗게), The Story of Fish and Snail(물고기와 달팽이의 이야기), By Mouse and Frog!(생쥐와 개구리가 함께 만든 이야기) 등 베스트셀러 그림책의 저자인 데보라 프리드먼의 또 하나의 대표작입니다.

샤이(Shy)는 이름 그대로 수줍움을 많이 타는 친구입니다. 너무 수줍어 해서 자신의 모습을 드러내지 않습니다. 이 책에서도 처음에는 샤이의 모습을 볼 수 없습니다.

샤이는 책을 읽는 것을 좋아하는데, 특히 새에 관한 책을 좋아합니다. 하지만 샤이는 새가 실제로 노래를 부르는 것을 들어본 적이 없습니다.

그러던 어느날, 노란 새 한 마리가 날아와서 아름다운 노래를 불렀습니다. "트립~ 트립~ 트루리~!" 노래 소리에 매료된 샤이는 숨어 있는 곳에서 나와서 노란새를 만나고 싶었습니다. 하지만 샤이는 새에게 어떻게 말을 걸어야 할지 몰랐습니다. 말을 걸다가 더듬거나 얼굴이 빨개지면 어떡하나 걱정이 되었습니다.

샤이가 걱정을 하고 있는 사이에 노란새는 그만 멀리 날아가 버리고 말았습니다. 너무나도 절실하게 노란새를 잃고 싶지 않았던 샤이는 태어나서 처음으로 숨어있던 곳에서 나와서 노란새를 쫓아갔습니다.

숨어 있던 곳에서 밖으로 나온 샤이는 바로 기린이었습니다.

샤이가 처음으로 만나는 대자연은 책에서 사진으로 봤던 것보다 훨씬 더 아름답고 경이로왔습니다. 노란새를 쫓아가는 동안 샤이는 놀라운 동물들도 만나게 되고, 노란새와 함께 다른 새들이 부르는 다양한 노래소리도 듣게 됩니다. 하지만 노란새는 다시 밤하늘로 사라져 버리고, 샤이는 이제 더 이상 노란새를 찾을 수 없었습니다.

집으로 돌아 온 샤이는 노란새를 그리워하며 새에 관한 책을 읽고 있는데 어디선가 익숙한 소리가 들려왔습니다.

"트립 트립 트립~ 트루 리 리 리~ 트루-리-리~ 트루 리이이~"

다시는 노란새를 잃지 않겠다고 다짐한 샤이는 노란새와 비슷한 소리로 노래를 불렀습니다. "트윕 트윕 트위입"

그 소리를 듣고 노란새가 다시 날아왔습니다. 새의 이름은 플로렌스였습니다. 이제 샤이와 플로렌스는 친구가 되어서 같이 책을 읽기도 하고, 함께 산책도 나가는 등 항상 함께 붙어 지내는 절친이 되었습니다...

In this serene, unassuming story, readers meet Shy, a giraffe who is happiest - both figuratively and literally - "between the pages of a book." Shy, unseen for a large portion of the tale and unidentified until its close, is exceedingly bashful and prefers to experience the world by reading. In particular, he loves books about birds, and when he encounters a beautiful songbird, he makes the brave decision to follow her. Shy's journey takes him across wondrous landscapes and introduces him to other remarkable animals, but just as he summons the courage to speak to her, she is gone, and Shy returns home, heartbroken. When the songbird reappears, Shy, in a satisfying moment of daring, calls out to her (thus identifying himself to readers as well), and the two begin a sweet friendship. The spare text works in lovely concert with the soft, muted illustrations. Composed using pencil, watercolor, and bits of colored pencil, they evoke a sense of joy and wonder. As the book opens, the images are saturated with warm tones of orange and gold, hinting at Shy's identity, and bursts of soft blue and yellow accompany the songbird's introduction. Freedman expertly shifts the color palette to express Shy's emotions and moods. In moments of bravery, exploration, and friendship, the colors brighten; when Shy struggles with his feelings of timidity, the orange tones once again seep into the pages. The subtle beauty of the art invites multiple readings. VERDICT This warm, gentle meditation on overcoming fears and making new friends is suitable for a cozy read-aloud and quiet one-on-one enjoyment.
